Nov 25, 2015

Weekly news in pictures

There were some huge news stories that broke last week so lets quickly review some of the most important to his the headlines.

A terrorist attack on the luxury Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako, capital of Mali, left at least 19 dead last week. The dead included an American, an Israeli, three Chinese, six Russians, two Belgians and witnesses report numerous members of the hotel’s security staff were killed when the dozen or so attackers struck using a car featuring diplomatic plates. Both Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and al-Murabitoun claimed responsibility for the attack although authorities couldn’t confirm either claim.

Last week Anastasia Lin, the winner of Miss World Canada claimed she had been shut out of the finals of the Miss World contest by the hosts China for her outspoken stance on their record of human rights abuses and her defense of the Falun Gong who are deemed an illegal cult by the Chinese communist party. Without an official letter of invitation, which other finalists received in late October, she is unable to apply for the necessary visa. Miss World Canada said it would not provide a replacement.

A massive manhunt continued across Belgium last week as authorities sought the armed-and-dangerous Salah Abdeslam amidst intelligence reports that indicated an imminent threat of attack. Brussels, the capital, remained under lockdown for several days with residents told to avoid crowds, the city’s metro closed down and soldiers patrolling the streets. Many European capitals remain on a high state of alert following the attacks perpetrated in Paris on Friday the 13th that left 130 dead and hundreds injured.

In sport Chelsea took an hour to get the only goal scored in their Premier League fixture with Norwich giving them a much needed win in a week that saw Jose Mourinho claim that reaching the top of the table was “Mission Impossible” and that “Maybe Tom Cruise can do it, but it’s complicated.” Will the diminutive Hollywood star give up his career to manage the London side? You’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out, but in the meantime he’s a look at some of the big stories we covered last week.

1. Holly Holm landed a big punch on sportsbooks with her UFC 193 KO win against Rousey.

4. Numbers after week 11 of the 2015 NFL season suggested that this year could be the fourth straight record-breaking season for Vegas sportsbooks.

5. PokerStars produced its seventh millionaire through the random prize Million Dollar Sit and Go tournaments.

Meanwhile an audience member on the long running BBC television show Question Time asked why the media continued to associate mainstream Islam with the militant terrorists in ISIS by calling them Islamic State (given they’re neither Islamic nor a state) saying “If I call myself a zebra do you them refer to me as a zebra?” Many experts encourage the use of the term Daesh instead a pronunciation of the acronym that also sounds uncannily like “a bigot who imposes his views on others” instead.

The week in pictures: October 06 – October 12, 2015

Oct 14, 2015

Weekly news in pictures

There were a lot of important news stories that broke over the last seven days so lets look back at some of the biggest.

Turkey began three days of mourning on Sunday after a peace march in central Ankara was attacked by two explosions that killed over one hundred people. A team of four civil and police inspectors began an investigation into the attack the government blamed on ISIS, left wing militants or the PKK, the Kurdish freedom fighters with whom a truce recently broke down. The left wing organizers of the march placed blame on the government of Recep Tayyip Edogan for failures in security.

The death toll in the ongoing mounting violence in Israel/Palestine continued to rise last week as Palestinians clashed with security forces and numerous stone throwing attacks added to the rising tensions following the 14 stabbing attacks that have targeted Jews since October 3rd and spawned at least one revenge attack in which four Palestinians were stabbed. Both sides blame each other for the situation, with the Israel cabinet setting the minimum jail term for stone throwing at four years.

In Pyongyang, capital of North Korea, the nation’s leader Kim Jong-un presided over a massive rally to celebration the 70th anniversary of the formation of the ruling Worker’s Party. Thousands marched through the city’s huge main square in a parade that included troops and military vehicles, traditionally dressed ladies waving flowers and a fly-past by the air force. The parade also featured a display of ICBMs and a reference made to the country’s controversial nuclear program.

In sport Wales qualified for the Euro 2016 finals in France despite losing 2-0 to Bosnia-Herzegovina, the first time the team has reached a major tournament final since 1958. Finishing second place in the group behind Belgium, the question is can the Welsh side continue this run of success against the best sides in Europe next summer? You’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out but in the meantime lets look back at some of the major news stories we covered over the last seven days.

1. More than 250,000 players participated in PokerStars online poker tournament, which was the largest such event all time.

2. FIFA vice president Michel Platini was handed a 90-day suspension, virtually taking him out of the race for FIFA presidency.

3. Ladbrokes Coral merger could come through in late 2015 or early 2016 after USD 2.1 billion facility was secured.

4. Jurgen Klopp will be the great addition to the Premier League as the German will bring fresh ideas and a new approach to English football.

Meanwhile Salman, a 12 year old Jaguar on lone to The Delhi Zoo has been reportedly sent home having failed to make with their female Kalpana because he’s too fat. “The female is seen trying to entice him,” said Riaz Khan, “but he lies in a corner and refuses to respond.” Keepers report his appetite, that of the average tiger, has made him lethargic and a strictly imposed diet failed to provide improvement or any off-spring from Kalpana, who has failed to mate with three males thus far.

Jul 21, 2015

Weekly news in pictures

Numerous big news stories broke over the last week so lets glance back through some of the most important that we covered in the last seven daysThe Sun Newspaper in the UK (often described as “The Scum”) shocked the public last week by releasing footage of a young Queen Elizabeth II, the current monarch, playing with her mother and uncle, who became Edward VIII, in the gardens of Balmoral Castle using a Nazi salute. The private film made in the 1930s has sparked furious debate with many now calling on the Royal Family to open their archives and make their family links with the Third Reich a matter of public record.

Services for the 298 passengers and crew killed in the MH17 plane crash were held around the world last week on the first anniversary of the tragedy that saw a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 shot down by a BUK surface-to-air missile system during the Ukrainian civil war battle for Shakhtarsk Raion. Neither side has yet taken responsibility for the incident and have instead concentrated on blaming each other although the weight of evidence points to pro-Russian separatists having fired the missile.

In the US an attack on a military recruitment office and Navy & Marine Reserve Center in Chattanooga last week left five members of the armed services dead with numerous others wounded in two separate gun attacks perpetrated by 24 year old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez who was killed at the scene. Although his motive remained unclear the authorities sought to establish if he’d had links to any terrorist organizations like ISIS when it became clear he was heavily influenced by radical Islam.

In sport the Formula One world pledged to keep safety its foremost concerned after French driver Jules Bianchi died as a result of the extreme head injuries he suffered following a crash in the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. “We must never let this happen again.” Said Bernie Ecclestone hearing the news, but can Formula One retain audience figures if the danger is removed? You’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out, but in the meantime lets review some of the big stories we covered over the last seven days.

1. After the 46-0 record defeat many fans thought that the loss would help Micronesia to get a FIFA membership.

Meanwhile on the isolated pacific island famed for its mysterious statues the Easter Island Statue Project has been excavating a pair of the giant “heads” over the last three years finally revealing that the “Moai” actually have bodies in scale that were buried during a volcanic eruption. Covered in ornate carvings the purpose behind the Moai remains a mystery but the project hopes to make an inventory of all the island’s statues although this is destined to take quite a while given these two took so long.

A Tunisian beach resort was turned into a bloodbath last week as a 23 year old ISIS sympathizer, Seifeddine Rezgui, opened fire with a machine gun on unarmed tourists. Holiday makers ran for their lives as Rezgui gunned down 39 and injured a further 36. Tunisia has already seen a similar soft-target attack on its soil this year with 22 mostly foreign tourists killed in a central Tunis museum in March. Rezgui was killed at the scene by police.

In the US the Supreme Court had a busy week ruling on the contentious issues of the Affordable Healthcare Act and Same-Sex marriage within days of each other. In a victory for the Obama White House the act popularly named “Obamacare” passed 6-3 but even that paled when compared with the huge celebration of the courts upholding of the constitutional right of the LGBT community to marriage by 5 to 4 at the annual pride marches that coincided with the ruling.

Alexis Tsipras, the Greek Prime Minister, responded to the deepening financial crisis in his country by calling for a referendum on the demands made upon the nation by its Eurozone creditors. This irked the creditors which resulted in a cutting off of the bailout funds the EU has provided over the last five years. This meant that banks would remain closed and ATM withdrawals would be limited to 60 Euros until the July 5th vote, the first of its kind since 1974 when the nation voted to remove the monarchy.

In sport Nelson Piquet Jr won the inaugural season of Formula E the single seat racing competition that pits cars powered only by electricity against each other. Despite a terrible qualification for the final race in London’s Battersea Park Piquet did just enough to take the championship. Will this herald a future of greener motorsport, you’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out, but in the meantime lets look back at some of the stories we covered last week.

1.Monday 22 June 2015, Nyon, Switzerland: The UEFA Champions League and Europa League draws took place; first round teams of the UEFA Europa League will have to start their campaign on July 2nd.

Meanwhile in the US two major broadcasters had moments of major stupidity as Fox News and CNN both broadcast pieces of silliness. Fox decided to air one of its anchors, a Martha MacCallum, asking if the Supreme Court’s ruling on gay marriage paved the way for trios of people to wed, which was nearly as ridiculous as CNN broadcasting pictures of what it said was an ISIS flag at the London Gay Pride march only to find out it actually depicted a selection of butt-plugs and dildos.
