Arsenal v West Ham: Tough Debut for Cech

Arsenal kicked off the season with an uninspiring performance against West Ham on Sunday, that ended in a defeat.

Arsene Wenger brought in Petr Cech from Chelsea in the summer to stop conceding cheap goals. Yet, the experienced Czech international looked like a youth player making his debut at full level at the Arsenal v West Ham derby in the opening round of the 2015-16 Premier League season. Cech made two errors, both of them leading to goals, scored by Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate.

But the aspect of the game that could be the most discouraging for Arsenal fans was the Gunners’ overall display. As Arsene Wenger put it after the game, they were unconvincing. Up front and at the back as well. Despite Arsenal players are anything but inexperienced youngsters, they looked like an Arsenal team from an earlier period of Wenger’s reign. Arsenal are 5.5 (9/2) to win the Premier League at Bet365.

Arsenal doomed themselves, Arsene Wenger expressed after Arsenal v West Ham, that ended 0-2. The Gunners’ manager said defensive lapses caused their defeat against their city rivals in the opening round of the 2015-16 Premier League season. He also said that his team’s overall performance was “not convincing”, online mobile news report.

The visitors clearly deserved the win in the Arsenal v West Ham derby. The match also saw a poor performance from Petr Cech, who made his Premier League debut for Arsenal on Sunday after a summer switch from Chelsea, after he spent 11 years at Stamford Bridge. He made errors before both goals the Hammers scored. Wenger did not blame the defeat on the 33-year-old Cech international however.

He said, “The way we conceded the goal just before half-time, with the experience that we have in our team – it’s difficult to understand. It was a collective lapse. There are many things to say about that. I knew that if the delivery was good, we would be in trouble, even before the free-kick was taken. The concentration was not completely there on the set piece, the organisation was not perfect. The positional play – we were too far from our goal. We gave him [Kouyaté] too much distance to run into. We killed ourselves.”

Telegraph.co.uk: Arsenal need to sign a world-class striker to win the Premier League – you cannot just go with Olivier Giroud

After a promising spring and an impressive summer transfer window, Arsenal looked like genuine title contenders, according to fans, pundits and experts of gambling facts. Yet they started the season with a defeat, as Arsenal v West Ham ended 0-2 on Sunday. This doesn’t change the Gunners’ status however, but pointed out that Arsene Wenger need to invest in a world class striker to challenge for the title indeed.

Though Petr Cech made two big errors in the Arsenal v West Ham game, he might still be a worthy addition to the squad. However, Arsenal needs a natural striker, as Olivier Giroud is not enough for a successful title run. Arsenal’s other attackers, like Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez are versatile forwards, but neither of them is a pure striker.

Danny Welbeck is more useful in that position, but he seems to be prone to injuries. Giroud might be a better player than the public sees him, but Arsenal need more options up front to win the league. Arsenal and Manchester United, and maybe the other two teams from last year’s top four have the same problem. And maybe all of them are about to complete one big signing each before the transfer market closes.

Arsene Wenger expressed after the Arsenal v West Ham match, where the home team was beaten 2-0, that his team was not convincing regarding attacking and defending. He also mentioned the easy goals, both coming with a very bad timing, at both sides of half time. Wenger said that West Ham looked sharper, and that they are clearly ahead of Arsenal considering preparation.

That is hardly a surprise for those, who follow sports scores, since Slaven Bilic’s side completed six competitive matches already this season. Even though the Croatian had to give up the last Europa League qualifier, and with that the competition too, as the Hammers’ squad is anything but equipped for double strain.

Wenger admitted, “I knew before game it would be tricky game on that front. A big part of it was not to concede, even if we played for a 0-0. The way we conceded the goal just before half-time, with experience we have in our team, is difficult to understand.”

To get the corpse of Fangio exhumed and perform a DNA test was ordered by a Mar del Plata judge. Mar del Plata is next to Balcarce in Buenos Aires province. Espinosa became a racing driver himself and is recognized as Oscar ‘Cacho’ Fangio in the world of motorsport. Juan Manuel Fangio did not married in his lifetime. Aldon Smith Released by 49ers

Aug 08, 2015 - by Dani

SF got 99 problems, but now 99 ain’t one (Photo: Kelley L Cox-USA Today)

Another arrest for driving under influence saw Aldon Smith released by the San Francisco 49ers. This was the star linebacker’s fifth arrest in three years.

San Francisco 49ers defender Aldon Smith was arrested on Thursday for suspected hit and run and driving under the influence. He was bailed out, but the next day came the news reporting Aldon Smith released by the 49ers. We knew that the San Francisco NFL franchise has some problems. They replaced head coach Jim Harbaugh with Jim Tonsula after last season, and also had a bunch of key players departing or retiring. They are outsiders to win the NFC West with odds of 11.00 (10/1) at Bet365.

But now we also know that Aldon Smith also has serious problems. With a history like his, it will be enormously hard to find a way back to the NFL. He has to fix his life first. But before that, he has to acknowledge that he has a problem and he needs help.

NYTimes.com: 49ers Release Star Defender Aldon Smith, Adding to Their Recent Turmoil

After a troublesome offseason for the San Francisco 49ers came the news about Aldon Smith released by the California NFL franchise. The former Pro Bowl defender was arrested on Friday. He was accused with hit and run, driving under the influence and vandalism, online mobile news report.

The 49ers finished the 2014 NFL season with a disappointing 8-8. After that head coach Jim Harbaugh left the franchise and a group of key players also departed or retired. Now it was the star linebacker’s turn, as the headlines “Aldon Smith Released by the San Francisco 49ers” appeared in the media.

Smith had several troubles off the field recently. The NFL suspended him for nine games last year for violating the league’s policy on substance abuse and personal conduct. More than a year ago he had an airport incident, appeared to be claiming that he was carrying a bomb. In 2013 he was arrested for DUI charges, which led to a five-game suspension.

49ers.com: Jim Tomsula Explains Decision to Release Aldon Smith

New San Francisco head coach Jim Tomsula commented the move that saw Aldon Smith released from the 49ers organization in a press conference. Star linebacker Smith was arrested on Thursday, gambling news reported. Smith had a meeting with the head coach and general manager Trent Baalke before they made the call.

Jim Tomsula: There’s only so much you can do for someone not willing (Photo: Getty Images)

Tomsula said, “I think you’re all aware, the San Francisco 49ers released Aldon Smith today. It’s a sad day. This is a day that doesn’t have anything to do with football. Although he won’t will be playing football for the San Francisco 49ers, he will be supported, and he will be helped.”

He added, “He won’t have to walk this path alone. “We’re not worried about football. It has nothing to do with football. If one person out there reads this, and you’re struggling, get help. Go get it. You’re worth it. There’s a value in every human being. Get the help. You don’t have to walk alone.”

Tomsula also spoke about the locker room’s reaction to the news reported Smith’s arrest. He said, “It was sadness, that’s what it was, sadness for a guy, a person. We care about that guy. Deeply.”

Sports.Yahoo.com: Will Aldon Smith get another chance in the NFL? It’s unclear right now

The news about Aldon Smith released by San Francisco came hardly a surprise for those who follow NFL gambling facts. Smith registered five of the 49ers’ 12 arrests in the last three years. He also refused to claim responsibility for his troubles. It seems that though he might be an amazingly talented young player, he is unfortunately not capable of pulling his life together.

He also denied that he made a mistake on Thursday after his latest arrest came. And speaking with the team, he denied that he was responsible for his off the field problems. Maybe this was what got Aldon Smith released by the 49ers. He had had his chances, yet failed to improve his behavior or to ask for help. The franchise did what they had to do.

New 49ers coach Jim Tonsula insisted that he and the organization will be there to help Smith. But first of all, Smith has to acknowledge that he needs help. Without doing that and working for his life to be fixed, there is no way back to the NFL. Aldon Smith released by the 49ers – out of the NFL for good, perhaps.

Manuel Pellegrini Contract Extended

Manuel Pellegrini contract extended

Manchester City rewarded Manuel Pellegrini’s work with a new contract. The new deal ties the Chilean manager to Etihad Stadium until the end of the 2016-17 Premier League season.

It was speculated by many pundits, supporters and gambling blogs that City’s Chilean manager is no more than a benchwarmer until Pep Guardiola becomes available. However, Manchester City ended, or at least postponed all this with a Manuel Pellegrini contract extension. The new deal will run out at the end of the 2016-17 Premier League season as opposed to his previous one which was due to expire next summer. Will the Pellegrini contract give City the distraction-free base they’ll need?

Pellegrini’s job was reportedly under threat after his team produced a poor second half in last year’s Premier League season. That run ended without a trophy, and this is always a possible motivation for change at Etihad Stadium. However, Pellegrini, who revealed this offseason, that he needed a new Lionel Messi, got Raheem Sterling to take on next year’s campaign. Man City are 1.67 (4/6) favourites at West Brom in their first league game this season on Monday night. Gambling news reported that Sterling is 2.75 (7/4) to score at Bet365.

Manchester City announced that Manuel Pellegrini signed a new, two-year contract with the club. His previous deal was due to run out at the end of the 2015-16 Premier League season. The news about the Manuel Pellegrini contract extension can come as a surprise to many, who follow sports scores.

It was speculated long that City wanted to acquire the services of ex-Barcelona and current Bayern Munich boss, Pep Guardiola. Former AC Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti and Jurgen Klopp, who recently left Dortmund were also mentioned in the media as possible replacements for Pellegrini. Answering a question regarding that, Pellegrini said,“I am not talking about Pep Guardiola, he is a manager that every team will want to manage because he is a great manager.”

He added, “I have no problem with my relations inside the club. I know exactly how the owners think. I was used last season to the speculation. Carlo Ancelotti had a contract signed and Jurgen Klopp had also a contract. For me, the owners are happy with the way I am working. Me, I am also happy at this club. It is impossible to know about the future.”

The Pellegrini contract also covered his lieutenants, assistant manager Ruben Cousillas, goalkeeping coach Xabier Mancisidor and fitness coach Jose Cabello. His commissions have also been extended by the Sky Blues. Pellegrini commented the set of new contracts happily. He expressed, “The contract shows the club trusts in my work”.

It seems unlikely that Pep Guardiola is joining Manchester City next summer, as the club announced a Manuel Pellegrini contract extension, online mobile news report. The Chilean manager took over Man City before the 2013-14 season and took the Sky Blues to a Premier League title and a Capital One Cup victory instantly. After a trophyless second season however his future was questioned. His previous contract was to run out next summer, but he signed a new, two-year deal.

Pellegrini said, “I am proud to manage Manchester City and am therefore very pleased to have agreed this contract. I have a very good quality group of players and a great team of people to work with on and off the field and at all levels of the club. I am focused on the coming season and confident that my team and I will respond to the constant support shown to us by everyone including of course our fantastic fans.”

The Manuel Pellegrini contract extension was also commented by Manchester City’s CEO, Ferran Soriano, who previously worked with Pep Guardiola at FC Barcelona. According to Soriano, the Sky Blues gave the new deal to the 61-year-old because the team improved significantly under his supervision.

Soriano said, “We are delighted to reach this agreement with Manuel Pellegrini, who has already contributed so much to the development of Manchester City in his first two years with us and we look forward to further progress in the seasons ahead. This agreement allows Manuel to focus on the challenge of guiding a team capable of both fighting for domestic titles and competing for European honours.”

Di Maria Transfer to PSG Completed

Aug 06, 2015 - by Dani
Di Maria transfer to Paris complete

He will love it in Paris, too, don’t worry (Photo: SkySports)

Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain both announced that the Angel di Maria transfer between the two clubs was completed.

The Argentine midfielder joins the French champions after an unsuccessful spell at Old Trafford. Though it seemed at the start of the 2014-16 Premier League season that Di Maria will be an asset for the Red Devils, he failed to fulfill the expectations. After he arrived as the most expensive player in British football, it seemed that he is a perfect fit to Louis van Gaal’s system.

The inside midfielder is able to cover a lot of distance moving horizontally on the pitch while also making dangerous forward runs. He is a player hard to come by in European football, but very useful in a creative three-man midfield, or a midfield diamond. He can also play in the forward line, and he is usually referred as a winger, since his natural role is traditionally unknown in English football.

The Angel di Maria transfer from Manchester United to PSG was finally completed. Online gambling news reported last week that the two clubs have agreed on his transfer fee. However the Argentine midfielder signed his four-year contract only on Thursday. Manchester United confirmed first via their official social media feed, that the Di Maria transfer was done.

The player, who was an integral member of the Argentina national team that finished as runners-up in last year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil, as followers of sports scores might remember, was understandably delighted. He revealed, “I am very proud, and can’t wait, to wear the colours of Paris Saint-Germain. I want to win every competition we enter, both in France and Europe. I want to win the Champions League, which is a dream for all footballers, for a second time.”

His abilities were praised by Paris Saint-Germain’s Club Presient, Nasser Al Khelaifi. He said, “He is an incredibly talented player, with a frightening speed and ability to beat opposition players. He adds his name to the club’s strong South American community and, above all, the big Paris Saint-Germain family.”

TheGuardian.com: Ángel Di María: the reluctant Manchester United player who ended up a costly mistake

Soon after the Di Maria transfer from Real Madrid to Manchester United was announced, it seemed that the Argentine attacker regretted the move instantly. He bid farewell to Madrid fans in an open letter twelve months ago, and it was clear that he did not intended to play for another team. For him Manchester United was better than nothing, stunning many of those, who follow live sports results.

He wrote last summer, “Unfortunately, I have to go but I want to make clear that this was never my desire. My cycle at Real Madrid has come to an end. It’s impossible to capture everything I’ve experienced here in a few lines but I hope this letter communicates what I feel at the moment. There are many things that I value and many of them have nothing to do with my salary. I hope to find them at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

It was especially an upsetting entrée after Manchester United invested GBP 59.7 million in the Di Maria transfer plus the Argentine’s luxury wages. He became the most expansive player in the history of English football, however he was unable to live up to the expectations. He wanted a leading role as a starter, but he wasn’t able to establish himself in United’s first XI.

The Argentine traveled to Qatar to complete the medical tests. Manchester United lost GBP 16 million regarding fees with the double Di Maria transfer in twelve months. Di Maria became the most expensive player in the history of British football right after he was the best player on the field in last year’s Champions League final. Real Madrid beat city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in Lisbon.

He played in 27 Premier League games during his year-long spell in Manchester. Though his tally of three goals was disappointing, he was third in the league regarding assists with 10. He scored his last league goal in October, and after that it became obvious that he is unable to settle in at Old Trafford.

Mourinho and Abramovich: The Row is the Past

Aug 06, 2015 - by Dani

Mourinho and Abramovich make peace? Money talks, and a lot of money is very loud (Getty Images)

Mourinho and Abramovich can work together without any problems, the Special One revealed before the 2015-16 Premier League season.

Jose Mourinho expressed that despite he was able to get along well personally with the Russian magnate between 2004 and 2007 too, they had professional disagreements. That eventually led to the Portuguese leaving Stamford Bridge in September 2007. However since Mourinho returned to London in 2013, the two enjoy a fantastic relationship. And now they are working for Chelsea’s second title in a row. The Blues are favourites to win the 2015-16 Premier League season. Bet365 offers their title defence at odds of 2.63 (13/8).

TheGuardian.com: José Mourinho says disagreements with Abramovich in the past at Chelsea

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho revealed that any fight with club owner Roman Abramovich ended long ago. Mourinho delivered the Premier League title in both of his first two seasons at Chelsea between 2004 and 2006, as many of those, who follow live sports results might remember. However, the Portuguese left in September 2007 after Mourinho and Abramovich had a quarrel.

After he returned in 2013, he needed only two years to bring back the Premier League trophy to Stamford Bridge. He revealed that in his first spell at Chelsea he had some professional arguments with the Russian club owner. He said, “In my first period, my personal relationship [with Abramovich] was very good [but] professionally we had some interferences and a bit of a disagreement with some ideas.”

He added, “In this moment we don’t have this problem. When I left Real Madrid to come here, Mr Abramovich asked me to fight for titles. In my first season we were almost there, in my second season we did it and in my third season if you are close, you can always do it.”

ESPNFC.com: Mourinho and Abramovich – Chelsea manager happy with Roman Abramovich relationship

Mourinho and Abramovich are having a smooth relationship, according to the world class manager, since he returned to Chelsea from Real Madrid in 2013. Jose Mourinho revealed that he was asked to fight for the title by the Russian club owner, and this is exactly what he wants to do this year, online mobile news report.

However, the Special One thinks that the rivals will pose a real threat on the Blues’ way for their second title in a row. He said, “Arsenal are a fantastic club with great players. Liverpool have amazing investment. Man City is a squad to love and a club, with two Premier Leagues in the last four or five years. And Man United with everything – the history, the players, the investment.”
Reigning champions Chelsea was defeated by FA Cup winner Arsenal 1-0 in the Community Shield last Sunday. The Blues kick off their Premier League season at the Stamford Bridge against Swansea on Saturday.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is preparing to fight for his fourth Premier League title in his third year of his second spell at Stamford Bridge. To claim the trophy, it is also important that Mourinho and Abramovich are all good, as gambling news reported, despite they had some disagreements in their past.

Mourinho also goes for his second title in a row. The Stamford Bridge outfit would be the first side to retain the Premier League trophy since Manchester United in 2009. The Portuguese said that this year’s story will be similar to recent seasons. He said, “The top five are the top five, and why not a club like Tottenham to get in there?”

He added, “But in the end history plays a part and investment plays a part. Chelsea (were) four times champion in the last decade.” Mourinho also mentioned Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United as potential title contenders. He did not left out Manchester City of course, the team that will be Chelsea’s opponent in the Blues’ first away game on next Sunday, as many, who follows sports scores might know.

Daniel Sturridge Return Earlier than Expected

Aug 05, 2015 - by Dani
Can Daniel Sturridge return against Manchester

Liverpool’s prolific but injury prone striker is about to make the Reds game against Manchester United in September.

This is great news to Brendan Rodgers, and the early Daniel Sturridge return might be a huge boost for Liverpool. They will need every positive impulse, since there is a tough schedule ahead of them in the early weeks of the 2015-16 Premier League season. After the opening match at Stoke, they will entertain Premier League rookie Bournemouth at Anfield. This looks like a piece of cake, but right after this come the away trips to Arsenal and Manchester United with a home game against West Ham and the international break sandwiched between them. Sturridge can be useful for Liverpool after the usual injuries for players while on international duties. Liverpool is 3.75 (11/4) to finish in the top four in the Premier League at Bet365.

LiverpoolEcho.co.uk: Daniel Sturridge to return to Liverpool FC training this month – but can the Reds still bank their star striker?

This summer’s rehabilitation could be vital in Daniel Sturridge’s career. The striker was operated with a hip muscle injury, and spent most of the summer in the United States working to come back as early as possible. The Daniel Sturridge return was scheduled to October originally, but it seems that he can feature in the Reds’ game against Man United in September.

Can Sturridge return from injury

Ankle, hip, thigh injuries, Sturridge had them all (Photo: Independent)

The last 12 months were very tough for the 25-year-old. He had different kind of injuries and hardly could spend some time on the pitch. Still, he is Liverpool’s most prolific goalscorer. However, Brendan Rodgers might have been planning already for a future without him, having him back permanently would be a great boost to the team.

He joined Liverpool in 2013 January, and according to gambling facts, he scored 40 goals in 67 games since, which is a terrific record. And he also fits into Liverpool’s style perfectly. Being a natural goalscorer, who is equally strong physically and technically, he can engage and confuse defenders, providing space and opportunities to his teammates.

Telegraph.co.uk: Liverpool news: Daniel Sturridge return expected to action in September – and it could be against Man Utd

A Daniel Sturridge return is expected at Old Trafford against Manchester United on September 12. He is scheduled to get back to Melwood, the Liverpool training centre before the end of August. The striker was working on his rehabilitation programme during the summer in the United States, after he had a procedure to repair a problem in his hip muscle.

Sturridge had a lot of different injuries during the last few years, as many of those, who follow sports scores might remember. He had to miss a lot of games due to groin and calf problems. According to gambling news, his injuries were triggered by his chronic hip problem. Liverpool owners sent him to the US where a medical team, treating the Boston Red Sox, cured him to prevent further damages.

While he was away, Brendan Rodgers signed the young Belgian hitman, Christian Benteke for GBP 32.5 million. The two of them might form an intriguing partnership in the future, and the former Aston Villa striker could fill in for Sturridge as well, as long as he is not available.

It seems that a Daniel Sturridge return can come earlier than it was expected. He could be available after the international break, so he surely misses England’s two upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers. The Three Lions will face San Marino on 5 September and Switzerland on 8 September.

Will Sturridge return to England team

However, he could be selected for the Reds’ away trip at Manchester United after the Euro qualifiers. Sturridge was able to feature in twelve games only last season. He played as a starter seven times, and still managed to score four goals. He had two thigh injuries and also suffered from a calf problem in last season, as keen followers of live sports results might remember.

After the leg injuries, the 25-year-old player tore a hip muscle while playing against Manchester United at Anfield Road on 22 March. He was selected for two more games, but wasn’t able to make the team since then. He expectedly will join his teammates in August. But can Sturridge return in a form to take revenge on Man United?

Russell Wilson Contract: QB and Seahawks Happy

Aug 04, 2015 - by Dani
Russell Wilson contract extension

So, the Russell Wilson contract is finally signed, and player and team can now fully focus on the new campaign.

However, before the season gets underway, it is interesting to have a look at Wilson’s contract in depth. Though it was reported as a mega deal, the real worth of the new contract is that Wilson will be able to get a third, possibly huge one, before he is into his thirties. And it is important too, that he will get USD 31.7 million this year instead of the USD 1.5 million that was guaranteed by his third-round rookie deal. According to Bet365 Sportsbook, the Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks are favorites to win Super Bowl L, available at 5.00 (4/1).

BusinessInsider.com: Russell Wilson contract is the latest evidence that NFL contracts are a joke

The Seattle Seahawks were able to agree on a new deal with his quarterback just before the start of the training camp. The Russell Wilson contract was reported as a four-year, USD 87.6 million deal, however, gambling news reported that the situation is far trickier than that.

If you look at the numbers, first you will find out that there is USD 61.5 million guaranteed money against injury, which is the most all-time in an NFL contract. Only Aaron Rodgers gets more than Wilson’s USD 21.9 million average salary. The USD 31 million is the biggest signing bonus from the last two years, tied with Ben Roethlisberger’s contract, as many experts of gambling facts might know.

However, if you look a little bit closer, you might notice that in fact this is no more than a one-year, USD 31.7 million deal. The Seahawks will have an option for every additional year. So, in other words, Seattle has all the control, and can get rid of Wilson in any of the following seasons. They wouldn’t have to give him a penny beyond money already paid to him.

CBSSports.com: Inside the numbers: Russell Wilson contract broken down year by year

The Russell Wilson contract is not amongst the biggest NFL deals, but it seems that the 26-year-old quarterback has made a reasonable deal. The exact numbers of his contract can be adjusted in the following years, it won’t be news for those, who follow sports scores.

Though it appeared in the media as a four-year, USD 87.6 million deal, gambling news reported that not so much of that amount is fully guaranteed. He has a fully guaranteed USD 31.7 million , and USD 20 million of it will be on his bank account by August 10. An additional chunk of USD 11.7 million arrives in April. So, his fully guaranteed money is far from those in the biggest quarterback contracts of the NFL.

He will get 56.6 million dollars in his first three years, which is less than Cam Newton’s 67 million or Ben Roethlisberger’s 65 million. However, he was on a rookie contract that ensured him 1.5 million only for 2015. Now he has injury guarantee money of 61.5 million dollars in his four-year contract, which is a considerable improvement.

SBNation.com: How Russell Wilson’s comma-laden deal sets the NFL market

The Russell Wilson contract extension was a good deal for both sides. The Seahawks ensured that their franchise quarterback will stay in Seattle for the next four years. Meanwhile Wilson can make a lot of money in the following years. And maybe, more importantly, he can get a giant third contract when the current one expires.

reaction of teammates to Russell Wilson contract

It was key for Wilson to get a four-year extension instead of a five-year deal, according to online mobile news. This is exactly what Wilson’s agent, Mark Rodgers emphasized. He said, “You do a four-year extension so you can look at your client and say ‘look, (when) you are going into the final year of this deal at 30, you are (still) a young man.’”

And until he is 30, he still gets elite quarterback money. Despite the relatively low fully guaranteed money on his contract, the deal is between what Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger gets annually.

Weekly news in pictures

With so much going on in the world last week perhaps we should take a moment to glance back at some of the important news stories of the last seven days

Last week saw amazing results announced from the trials in Guinea of a experimental vaccine against the Ebola virus. In a trial encompassing over 4,000 people the drug was reported to be 100% effective amongst the 2,014 people who received it immediately and only 16 cases were found amongst those 2,380 who gained a delayed vaccination. Sponsored by the World Health Organization and both the Canadian and Norwegian governments the trial will now continue and expand within the west African country.

Investigations into the killing of Cecil the Lion continued last week with the government of Zimbabwe lodging a petition with the White House in the US to have Walter Palmer, the dentist that killed the animal just outside the Hwange national park in Zimbabwe, extradited back to the African nation to stand trial. The White House has a month to respond. For his part Walter Palmer did apologize, but only to his patients, and has said that he will assist the authorities in their investigation into the lion’s death.

After the withdrawal of Stockholm, Krakow and Oslo, the only two cities interested in hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics, China’s Beijing and Kazakhstan’s Almaty, battled it out for final selection last week with the Chinese capital coming away with the honor despite having already hosted a Summer games and not actually having any snow. The European cities withdrew citing a lack of public interest and the vast costs of hosting the event as being prohibitive. Despite human rights concerns China is seen as a safe pair of hands.

In sport a IAAF report leaked to the Sunday Times and ARD/WDR (a German broadcaster) shows that the extent of cheating in athletics is far wider than has been made public with dubious and suspicious test results that call into question nearly every winner and medalist in the top flight of athletics over the last decade and a half. Question is will the IAAF do anything about it or continue to cover up the cheating? You’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out, but in the meantime here’s the headlines from the last seven days.

Meanwhile just outside the small east Texan town of Marietta a man had to be airlifted to hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning after suffering bullet wounds sustained when the rounds he himself had fired ricocheted back off the armadillo he was targeting. In the second such incident this year the man was hit in the jaw by one of his own rounds and had to have it wired shut, it is not known at this time if the Armadillo survived the encounter. In the buildup to the 2015 Athletics World Championships in Beijing a large athletics doping scandal is about to erupt.

An inquiry was carried out by Australian doping experts, who analyzed confident IAAF medical data that was leaked by a whistleblower. According to the results, over third of the medal winning athletes at Olympics and world championships between 2001 and 2012 produced suspicious blood samples. An independent WADA commission will investigate the findings.

The International Olympic Committee stated that they will penalize any athlete who was guilty of cheating. The IAAF argued that the allegations “are largely based on analysis of an IAAF database of private and confidential medical data which has been obtained without consent.”

A group of scientist analyzed 12,000 blood samples recently. The samples were taken from 5000 sportspersons at international athletics competitions between 2001 and 2012. It was found out that doping and blood transfusion grew significantly in athletics during the investigated period.

Australian expert, Michael Ashenden was one of those who supervised the project. He expressed that the results suggest “a shameful betrayal of [the IAAF’s] primary duty to police their sport and to protect clean athletes.” He compared the athletics doping scandal to the issue that cycling had in the time when the sport was dominated by the seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.

He said, “There are allegations made, no evidence. We want to look into them seriously because to say that in athletics between 2001 and 2012 we did not do a serious job with tests is laughable.”

The investigation will be widely discussed by different news blogs and gambling news in the coming weeks before the 2015 Athletics World Championships. According to its findings, one third of the medal winners in endurance running at Olympic games and world championships in the discussed period were suspicious of doping. It mentions abnormal results, which might be the indicator of cheating.

Thomas Bach, President of International Olympic Committee (IOC) stated that he expects World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to examine the allegations completely.

He said, “WADA is very disturbed by these new allegations, which will, once again, shake the foundation of clean athletes worldwide. Given the nature of these allegations, they will immediately be handed over to WADA’s Independent Commission for further investigation.”

He added “These allegations require swift and close scrutiny to determine whether there have in fact been breaches under the World Anti-Doping Code and, if so, what actions are required to be taken by WADA and/or other bodies. As always, WADA is committed to doing what’s necessary to ensure a level playing field for clean athletes of the world.”

There is an ongoing investigation against the Russian athletics program. It was triggered by the first results and allegations based upon the analysis of the leaked IAAF medical data in December 2014.
