Manchester… but which one?

As the Premier League clubs are about to strengthen their squads, the biggest names in European football are involved in the discussions about possible transfer moves. It looks like Manchester United will finally acquire Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, but it is also possible that they will get competition if they really want to bring Sergio Ramos to Manchester, as City is reportedly interested too. The Blues are in talks about signing Juve’s Paul Pogba as well, but his enormous transfer fee could prevent the Frenchman’s move to Etihad Stadium.

Schneiderlin is considered as one of the finest holding midfielders in the Premier League and he is expected to take over Michael Carrick’s place in front of the United backline. This will be the Frenchman’s first opportunity to participate in the Champions League, as the Red Devils qualified for the competition again after a year of absence.

The French media reports that Man United will pay for Schneiderlin a fee around EUR 30 million (GBP 20 million) and according to English reports, the deal could be finalized this week. Schneiderlin was also linked with a move to the Emirates however Arsenal seems to be outbid by United.

ESPNFC.com: Manchester City to challenge United for Sergio Ramos’ signature?

The two giant clubs from Manchester have to battle against each other for Real Madrid’s Spanish World Champion and Champions League winnig defender, Sergio Ramos, gambling news report. Manchester United is looking for his signature for a while, and a possible deal also involving David de Gea was also emerged from the press.

However, according to the English media, Manchester City now entered the race for Ramos as the Blues’ board is watching the situation closely. If the contest will become more serious, this could be one of the most interesting transfer sagas of the summer.

Meanwhile former United star goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel suggests De Gea to stay at Old Trafford as he is on his way to become a legend for the Manchester club. The Spanish goalie expressed before that he wanted to move to Real Madrid, however the Danish icon sees a bright future ahead of De Gea at Old Trafford.

The Telegraph: Manchester City open talks with Paul Pogba

In the meantime Manchester City is just about to bring the young French star, Paul Pogba to Etihad Stadium from Juventus. The Turin-based club asks EUR 100 million (GBP 70 million) for one of its top asset and Pogba’s salary demand is reportedly EUR 12 million (GBP 8.5 million) for a year after tax, which means something around a GBP 160,000 salary per week.

All this won’t include the EUR 10 million fee of his agent, Mino Raiola, who is reportedly in talks with Txiki Begiristain, Manchester City’s director of football, according to latest gambling news. Pogba is also heavily linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid, and some experts speculate that City will miss out on Pogba eventually because of the high fee.

Though Barcelona is banned from transfers for this summer, they will be able to bring in new players in January. The Frenchman’s previous club, Manchester United was also keen to bring Pogba back, but the midfielder expressed that he is not interested in a move back to Old Trafford where he hardly got any chances to prove himself in the 2011-2012 season he spent there.

Sky Sports: Roberto Firmino strikes in Brazil’s final Copa America warm-up

Brazil beat Honduras 1-0 through Roberto Frimino’s strike in the first half. That was Brazil’s last friendly game before the Copa America, and it cost them default right back Danilo who injured his ankle early on. He is out for the tournament and Dunga instantly called up Barcelona’s Dani Alves to replace him, latest gambling news report.

Roberto Firmino scored the only goal of the game played in Porto Alegre. That was virtually the only exciting moment in the first half of a rather dull game played in steady rainfall.

Neymar, who joined the team on Monday after the final of the Champions League, had a disallowed goal and a great chance after he took the field in the second half. Chile Will Never Have an Opportunity like This Again

Chile National Football Team is Ready for Copa America

Chile National Football Team is Ready for Copa America

Chile participated in the first edition of the Copa America 99 years ago in Buenos Aires, still they did not won a single tournament yet. Now they have an excellent squad featuring world class footballers and capable of playing the fastest and most intense pressing game around. Chile uses an approach that is arguably the most up-to-date in football, though they will be under exaggerated pressure playing in front of their home crowd. Chile came very close to eliminate Brazil in the World Cup last year, and though they were unlucky then, their time might have come to achieve something big.

The Guardian: Chile host Copa América with best chance to end 99-year wait for title

Chile participated in the very first edition of the Copa America in Buenos Aires in 1916 together with Brazil, Uruguay and the hosts, Argentina. Uruguay, being arguably the best national team in the world that time, won that tournament and added 14 more Copa titles later, while Argentina captured 14 titles and Brazil also managed to win 8 Copas to date.

And Chile did not win one. But now they have probably the best chance to alter this record. They have top quality players in Claudio Bravo, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez, with a compact team that can play in 3-4-1-2 and 4-3-3 as well, always pressing and dictating a very high tempo.

They almost eliminated Brazil last summer in the round 16 of the World Cup, but the crossbar and the penalty shootout favoured the hosts then. However, Chile’s time might have come finally, though the injuries of Mauricio Isla and Eduardo Vargas hurts their chances according to latest gambling news.

ESPNFC.com: The Copa America: A summer of vindication and redemption awaits

The current Chile national team is the most talented the country ever had, so, as they will be playing on home soil, they will have as good a chance to win the Copa America they will never have again. Not to mention the strength of their group which is the easiest in the tournament, also featuring Ecuador, Mexico and Bolivia.

The prolific striker of Arsenal, Alexis Sanchez said that “The time has come to achieve big things.” However, this tournament will be also about the two South American giants. After Brazil were humiliated by Germany 7-1 in the semifinals, and Argentina were just beaten by Joachim Low’s side in the final, both teams have something to prove at the Copa.
The latter won its last trophy 22 years ago, and was struggling in the previous edition of the Copa at home. However they were able to find a way to bring out the most from Lionel Messi since, and the No. 10 is arguably in the best form of his career, which might be easily the best form in any football player’s career ever, according to many followers of sports scores.

WSC.co.uk: Pressure on Chile to end Copa América hoodoo

Though Chile has been present at the Copa America since it was first organized in 1916, they have never won the competition. Nations like Peru, Bolivia and Colombia were all had the opportunity to celebrate a Copa victory but this never happened with Chileans before. However, now they have a real chance to experience that feeling.

Chile hosted six Copas before, but they only reached the final once. National team coach Jorge Sampaoli, realizing the level of expectations amongst the fans, planned to take the squad to Europe to prepare for the tournament properly. However they opted to stay at home instead, placing the team’s facilities and the roads nearby under heavy security surveillance.

A Chilean TV station tried to make pictures of the squad’s training by deploying a drone, however when the device flew over the training pitch, Sampaoli ordered his team to leave the field. All media workers were also banned from the training center immediately, gambling news report.

Henry: Sterling to Destroy His Life and Career

May 22, 2015
Raheem Sterling

Older and wiser give their advice to Sterling

As the end of the footballing season in Europe is edging closer, more and more rumours are emerging from the press about clubs looking for players, players looking for clubs, possible deals and refused contract offers. Some footballers use the media in a way that upsets basically indifferent people, some of them are just disappointed with their situations and quietly counting their days until finally getting off from their current employers. Raheem Sterling’s future is the hottest topic around, but it is also interesting where the likes of Alex Song, Sami Khedira, Pedro and Radamel Falcao will end up before the start of the next season.

The Telegraph: Thierry Henry: Raheem Sterling risks destroying his life and career

Former Arsenal and Barcelona star Thierry Henry advised Raheem Sterling to stop his agent giving him bad advice that will lead to ruining his life and footballing career eventually. The football pundit is totally unhappy with the way Sterling’s camp handling the situation.
Sterling refused to sign the contract renewal he was offered by Liverpool previously, which was a 100,000 GBP per week bid, gambling news reported. A TV interview was set up for him, where he claimed it wasn’t about the money that he opted not to sign the paper.
Henry disagrees totally with that attitude. He said, “You can’t go out there and talk about your contract in the press. You have to respect your fans, respect the club that you play for. If you want to leave Liverpool or not, when you make the decision about leaving or staying, then do it. Don’t discuss yourself in the paper.”
Henry also added that when he was a young player, he had a similar problem with many of those surrounding him giving advices, influencing his footballing display in a bad way. He expressed, that, “you need to be able to say, ‘Enough, you’re destroying my life, you’re destroying my career.”

The Guardian: Football transfer rumours: Alex Song to Manchester City?

Alex Song, the Barcelona defensive midfielder loaned to West Ham is wanted by Chelsea and Manchester City. As he played for Arsenal for three seasons before his 21st birthday, he counts as a homegrown player in England, not to mention that he is a very good footballer indeed.
Barcelona stated before that they want to keep their unsettled forward, Pedro, however online mobile news reported that they will let him go in exchange for 7 million GBP. He only has one year left from his contract, and Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham all could use him, and Liverpool was interested in signing him too.
Atletico Madrid could get back their former superstar striker Radamel Falcao. The Colombian player returns from loan to Monaco soon, after he did virtually nothing at Old Trafford this year. The Principality’s club allegedly plans to offer him plus cash worth of 25 million GBP in exchange for Mario Mandzikuc.

Worldsoccertalk.com: Juventus nearing agreement for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, says report

Juventus is about to recruit unhappy midfielder Sami Khedira from Real Madrid, latest gambling news report. The world champion German hardly got any playing time this season, and he has been looking for a place to go in a while. It was understood in November that the club chose not to renew his contract as the midfielder did not accept an offer earlier.
Khedira is allegedly lost his role in the dressing room recently, though he was a firm starter under Jose Mourinho. However, the German had several injuries, while Real Madrid strengthened their midfield unit significantly by acquiring the likes of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.
Khedira expressed in March, that he would leave Madrid at the end of the season, and he allegedly decided to join Juventus. The Italians have to look for an industrious midfielder with Andrea Pirlo leaving this summer and the future of Paul Pogba hanging in the balance.

Monmouth Park is on its Way to Success

May 12, 2015
monmouth park racetrack

Horseracing is money

Monmouth Park is a historical racetrack in New Jersey. After a change of directory the Shore track has seen an increase of revenues. However to continue on the path to success it would be necessary for the gambling regulations in the state to change. The allowance of gambling would not only be beneficial to the horseracing industry but it would increase the tax income of the whole state.

NJ.com: Why Monmouth Park officials believe outlook for N.J. horse racing industry is brighter than ever

Dennis Drazin an advisor of the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association sees the horseracing of New Jersey as a good investment. Being the official management consultant of the Monmouth Park racetrack he is very much involved in all decisions made. From the order of events on the Opening Day to the season long advertising decisions.

This weekend is the start of the racetrack’s 70th season and it is more popular every day. Drazin told gambling news that Four years after the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority gave its approval for the NJTHA to operate Monmouth Park the track has already brought profit.
“Coming in on heels of having two straight years of better attendance and increased handle, I think we’re going to have a very strong season and I’m looking forward to being able to offer world-class racing at Monmouth Park,” were his words regarding the upcoming season.
Lobbyists are trying harder than ever to bring legal sports betting to racetracks and casinos in New Jersey. However the ruling will be announced at the end of May, the earliest. Drazin said that their goal is to be able to offer real sports betting in time for the football season this year.

NorthJerset.com: Horse racing: Monmouth Park opens Saturday, awaits ruling on sports betting

With 70 years behind its back Monmouth Park is standing strong in a dying business. This weekend’s opening day is just as feared by the owners as it is awaited. Although it seems like nothing could stand in the way of Monmouth Park’s success, in the world of thoroughbred racing there are no shortcuts and it is hard to stay in the game.
This is the fourth season of the racetrack with the New Jersey Horsemen’s Association in charge. As much as the change of directory seems to be guiding the Shore track toward success it gives a good reason to think about the future. The marvelous improvements in just these short few years suggest a great increase in the following years.

A crucial part to embracing the horseracing scene in New Jersey would be to change current gambling laws in the state. The U.S. Court of Appeals is expected to make a decision by the end of June, the latest. The Third Circuit ruling about the future of sports betting in Jersey could be business changing for the whole industry.
While waiting for the decision to be made man Monmouth is improving itself. Their team of trainers was joined by Gerald Bennett who ranks second in the Tampa Bay Downs trainer standings. Joe Bravo who is returning after a season in New York said; “There’s no place like Monmouth.”

USA Today: Monmouth Park close to breaking even fiscally

The positivity of the operators of the New Jersey shore thoroughbred racetrack is very reassuring. According to latest gambling news their expectation for Monmouth Park to either break even or to make a profit is based on the last three years books. Dennis Drazin made it clear at the he track’s season opening news conference that the best years are just ahead of them.

Although gambling is a rising industry the regulations in the state of New Jersey don’t allow it to increase. Raymond Lesniak who had been lobbying for the legislation of gambling said this might be the last push. He expects help from Senate President Steve Sweeney, Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto and Republican Gov. Chris Christie in order for a positive decision to be made this year.
“I hope they understand we are losing hundreds of millions of dollars to other states by not having casinos in north Jersey and that some of those revenues can be reinvested in Atlantic City and our racetracks to keep both of those industries from withering on the vine because that’s what is happening now,” Lesniak said.
He also said that if the bill passed in November it would still take at least two years for casinos to open in the northern side of the state. The reason for such delay is that the legislature would have to write new regulations and prize sites. The encouragement of sports trading clubs and other gambling related activities could help the state to a higher income.

Action-Packed Year Expected in 2015 Formula 1 Season

Mar 10, 2015
F1 2015

Formula 1 2015 Adventure is about to begin!

Australian Grand Prix, the first race of the new Formula 1 season, will start next weekend on 15 March, in Melbourne. The new racing year is expected to be very exciting and intriguing with many great sportsmen behind the wheels who already have their fame, and many young pretenders wanting to take over their famous rivals.

The current champion, Lewis Hamilton, is said to be mentally stronger than ever before, and his team mate, last year’s second placed driver Nico Rosberg, is also looking for a way to prove himself better than everyone else. Meanwhile 4-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and 2-time world champion Fernando Alonso are also looking forward to revive their careers with their new teams.

NDTV Sports: Formula One Gearing up for Another Eventful Year of Rivalry

This year’s championship will see less racers and less teams as 24 drivers took part in the tournament in 2014 while only 18 are competing this year. Well, it might be 20 in case of Manor-Marrusia, the team that was built from Marrusia, will succeed to qualify for the requirements.

It is true that there will be less drivers compared to the previous season, however we can expect the same amount of excitement due to the quality of the competitors. Latest gambling news regard Lewis Hamilton as the favorite for winning the title having set the odds at 1.53 (8/15) by Bet365, while those for his teammate Nico Rosberg are set at 3.50 (5/2).

The British, however, has many contenders, such as Sebastian Vettel who will start the new season at Ferrari or Fernando Alonso who left the Reds for McLaren Honda. So Vettel, Hamilton and Alonso are looking to claim their fifth and third championship title respectively but they have many young contenders.

The new season comes with many new names and most of these are incredibly young drivers. Toro Rosso launches young pairing with a combined age of only 37, while 20-year-old Russian Daniil Kvyat will race as teammate of emerging star Daniel Ricciardo at Red Bull. Sauber will also trust the young with their drivers being 22 year-old Brazilian Felipe Nasr and 24 year-old Swedish diver, Marcus Ericsson.

Eurosport: Formula 1 – Lewis Hamilton arrives in Australia in style and ‘stronger than ever’

Lewis Hamilton seemed to be very confident when arriving to Melbourne and stepping out of his red private plane. He tweeted a picture of himself saying „Australia, we are here!“ to which he received mixed responses from his followers.

Online gambling news quoted what he thinks about his mental strength after being asked about the rumours of his berak-up with Nicole Scherzinger. ” I think last year, I adapted… a mental attitude that was kind of, I would like to say, impenetrable In the previous years it has been the case where personal issues have affected my life in general but I feel that I still carry that kind of mentality from last year.“

The Englishman also talked about his wish to achieve even better results than he did during the previous season. “It’s not easy to better a season like last year. In terms of performance, it was the best year that I think I’ve ever had, but it doesn’t mean I can’t beat it so that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Lewis Hamilton also declared that his negotiations with Mercedes about renewing his contract are at the final stage and they are close to reaching an agreement. “Hopefully we’re in the final stages. I don’t really know what the timeline is for that but we’re not rushing. but we’re very much in the last stages of it. So for the foreseeable future, I’m committed to this team.”

NDTV Sports: Mercedes Won’t End Hamilton-Rosberg Rivalry: Wolff

Even though the fact that Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were already teammates in the previous season, they were each other’s greatest competitors as well. Last year, on the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa the two drivers collided when the German was trying to overcome his partner.

The team has blamed Rosberg who was given an unknown punishment after the incident and he also apologised publicly for his dangerous maneuvers. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff claims that the collision between the two drivers was good for the sport but they had crossed a certain line.

Executive director of Mercedes AMG Petrol also added, “We are not going to change our approach in terms of philosophy on how to let the drivers race. Even if it is not always easy. For us, for our brand, for Formula One, it was important to let them fight, one against the other.”

According to gambling news, Wolff also stated that emotion is very important in sports, and even though the two pilots went over-board, the team found a good solution. He proved his word by saying that his team has won the following 5 races after the accident.

The executive also said that Formula 1 is the number 1 car racing sport in the world so people who work for Formula 1 should stop talking negatively about the game. “We are the number one auto racing sport in the world and we must promote and support this image.”

Macau Gambling Hub’s Declining Revenues Cause for Alarm

Jan 06, 2015
Macau gambling revenues

Macau’s gambling revenues are decreasing

In 2014, Macanese gaming revenue decreased 2.6% to $54.4 billion. This is the first nose-dive of profits ever to be recorded, in 11 years, since 2002, when gambling laws liberated the casino market to competition. Revenues plunged 30.4% cent to $9 billion in the last month of 2014, making it the seventh straight month that profits have been waning.Macau, the largest gambling hub in the world, has seen its revenues steadily decline at an alarming rate last year. Analysts and gambling operators alike are speculating if the global recession is the main cause or is Jingping’s clampdown on illegal money laundering the main cause for concern. The Sidney Morning Herald: James Packer among billionaires hit by $100 billion Macau casino losses

The Chinese government crackdown on corruption in the gambling stronghold of Macau has left a whopping $100 billion hole in the market value of the six Macau casino stocks in 2014. The campaign, including the fight against debit card scams, impacted negatively on gambling activities. This has caused the gambling hub to experience its very first slump in gambling returns since 2002.

Australian billionaire James Packer, and other gambling operators, such as his joint venture partner’s father Stanley, or yet still anti-online gambling campaigner Sheldon Adelson, have all their casinos in a rut. Meanwhile analysts converge and discuss what all this could mean for the world’s largest gambling resort and its fortunes.

The Hong Kong exchange recently revealed in online mobile news, that all six Macau casino stocks listed a combined loss in market value amounting to $92 billion, in the 12 months up to December 31. The parent company Crown Resorts has 33.6 per cent of the joint venture and Ho another 33.6%.

Melco Crown alone lost a whopping $8 billion in market capitalization during last year. The fall represents a 35% decline in stock value just a year after the company’s value doubled, when gambling revenue increased 19% per cent.

However, the current decline in market capitalization has left the company opting to withdraw from the Hong Kong exchange, citing difficulties in raising funds and the need to limit share trades. Crown Resorts, said it was determined though to stick it out in the NASDAQ listings.

Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands’ subsidiary, Sands China, fared even worse. It hit a record low market capitalization of all the six stocks, with a mere $26 billion in profits. 40% loss in stock value was reported in 2014. Stanley Ho’s SJM Holdings, came out a little less scathed, with a 52 % loss in value, representing a market capitalization decline of $7 billion.

Channel News Asia: Melco Crown to delist in HK after Macau revenue slump

Hong Kong businessman Lawrence Ho and, James Packer, son of the defunct Australian media and gambling magnate, Kerry Packer, have communicated, in the latest gambling news that Melco Crown Entertainment has had its first plunge in profits ever, in Macau.

Melco Crown’s City of Dreams resort complex stock would be removed from the Hong Kong stock exchange in order to save costs and for practical reasons. For, to carry the listing would demand ‘additional ongoing regulatory compliance obligations and such requirements involve significant additional costs’.

The company went on to say that for now a solution hasn’t been found to increase profits even with a market capitalization of close to US$14 billion. However it also stated that it would keep its security on the official register of the NASDAQ in the US. Friday, 2 January, 2015 shares closed at a low 4.88% at US$24.16.

The ex-Portuguese colony reported on January 2 that gambling yields went down 2.6% year-on-year to US$44 billion last year. This has been the only decline since yearly numbers were made available to the public as of 2002.

Macau, China’s only legal casino gambling hub, relies heavily on high rollers from mainland China. However, big spenders are being scared off by the anti-corruption campaign launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his government to clamp down on Chinese officials accepting bribes. This has resulted in a slowdown in the mainland economy which directly affects casino earnings.

The Sidney Morning Herald: Packer’s Melco Crown set to quit Hong Kong Stock Exchange

Melco Crown Entertainment whose Macau casino is jointly owned by James Packer’s Crown Resorts and Macau gaming mogul Lawrence Ho has revealed that it will pull out of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange because of the immense pressure to raise money and limit share trades. However, it will remain on the NASDAQ, where its ‘shareholders are far more active’.

The company says it hopes that this move will not adversely affect the asset value or earnings for each share. It explains its actions by citing that “Appropriate opportunities to raise additional equity in Hong Kong have not arisen and maintaining the listing requires additional ongoing regulatory compliance obligations and such requirements involve significant additional costs and administrative burden”.

Crown Resorts who owns 33.6 % of the company and Ho, the same, now have to contend with decreased numbers of gamers from the mainland. Macau, which was once swarmed with eager punters who had just a little more than the China welfare lottery from mainland China, have had better days since public records started to reveal gambling revenues in 2002.

Chinese government’s campaign against illegal cash flow between the gaming hub and its officialdom has been blamed for the crisis at hand. Just last year October Crown Resorts hoped for a turnaround but come year end the chief executive, Rowen Craigie, admitted that “market conditions in Macau did weaken during the fourth quarter of financial year 2014”.

Some analysts speculate that gambling revenues may pick up by 10% in 2015, others think a decline of 9% is more likely to happen. Given the current worldwide financial crisis, the actual outcome will be like that of the toss of a coin – no one really knows.

Florida Could Start Selling Lottery Tickets Online

Nov 29, 2014
Florida Lottery

Florida Lottery goes online

Florida Senator Gwen Margolis wants to allow lottery fans living in the Sunshine State to purchase their tickets online. While gambling bonuses are still a rarity in the US, offering lottery tickets via the internet is nothing new. Seven US states already sell tickets on their websites and Florida could soon join their ranks, if a bill proposed by State Senator Gwen Margolis passes.

However, the new bill has few details on how the web service would work. New York residents can buy tickets using credit cards; players living in Georgia use a prepaid lottery card system; Illinois limits online purchases to $150 a day and allows winnings to be deposited into an online account. In Florida’s case, these details haven’t been clarified yet.

In support of her proposal, Margolis argued that internet sales would help increase revenue for the lottery, which is among the state’s biggest fundraisers. On the other hand, many fear that stores will take a financial blow if players will be able to conveniently purchase tickets from the comfort of their own homes.

United Press International: Florida Lottery could sell tickets online if bill passes

Last week, Florida State Sen. Gwen Margolis, D-Coconut Grove, introduced a bill proposing that the Sunshine State allow players to purchase lottery tickets online. If the bill is approved, Florida will become the eighth state to legalize online ticket sales.

“[The lottery is] one of the biggest fundraisers we have,” Margolis said. According to the latest gambling news, the Senator believes that legalizing online ticket sales would be much more beneficial for the state than building a casino resort in South Florida. This is a project Las Vegas Sands Corp. has been lobbying for over the past months.

“This way, anybody who wants to buy them can buy them. Expand that instead of having big problems with major gaming in the community,” she affirmed.

Opponents of the bill fear that allowing people to purchase tickets online would create more problems for gambling addicts. Brian Kongsvik, the helpline director of the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling, says being able to use a line of credit would cause people to lose that sense of pulling money out of their pockets. But Margolis argued that gamblers “like to sit at the table” and enjoy “the social part of it”.

All seven states offering online lottery tickets have their own payment mechanisms. The bill introduced by Margolis doesn’t mention which method would be used in Florida. Bill SB 120 is a one-page proposal stating:

“[The Lottery] shall have the authority to create a program that allows a person who is 18 years of age or older to make an online purchase of a Florida lottery ticket. The department may adopt rules to administer the program.”

Sun Sentinel: Florida Lottery may go online

Florida legislators could make playing the lottery a lot easier if they approve a bill introduced by state Sen. Gwen Margolis, D-Coconut Grove, and allow the lottery to sell tickets online. At present, tickets can only be bought at brick-and-mortar outlets and stores.

The Florida Lottery was founded in 1988, when voters passed a constitutional amendment that authorized the organization two years before. Over the years, lottery sales helped bring in $27 billion for education. Most of that profit was put in a trust fund to be divided up by the state legislature.

The proposal has some people worried about the harmful effects it might have on gambling addicts, but Margolis doesn’t think the online lottery would have a negative impact. Problem gamblers “like to sit at the table,” she said.

Brian Kongsvik, the helpline director of the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling explained: “With any online gambling, and the potential to use a line of credit, it loses that physical pulling money out of pocket.”

When it comes to legalizing gambling, the organization is neutral. However, Kongsvik fears that making lottery tickets that easily accessible could result in more people needing the help of his organization.

“In theory, there is no doubt about it that some individuals that have a gambling problem, or the potential to develop one, could use credit lines to gamble more than they normally would,” he explained.

Florida Courier: Florida Lottery sales hit record-setting $5.3 billion

As Florida residents become more and more obsessed with scratch cards and lottery tickets, the state lottery reported it had reached record sales of $5.3 billion earlier in July. While part of that profit goes to the state budget and educational programs, the organization spends between $28 million and $30 million on advertising every year.

Even before the Powerball or Mega Millions rollover jackpot spurred sales, the Florida Lottery posted $5.36 billion at its last sales report. The year before that, it was just over $5 billion. About 60% of the money goes to winners, leaving $1.49 billion for the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund.

The increased revenues were generated by a growth in ticket sales. Scratch-off tickets are available in more than 13,000 locations across the state, with prices ranging from $1 to $25. Over the past year, sales went up by 12.7%. The $25 ticket is the most popular one, accounting for $13 million in weekly sales. Powerball sold $469 million, Mega Millions made $167 million and Lotto reached $349 million.

Lottery Deputy Secretary of Sales Tom Delacenserie said: “If we have a $600 million jackpot or $550 million jackpot, we just get out of the way and the sales take off. Last year we didn’t get up that high.”

Court Puts New Jersey Sports Betting on Hold

Nov 21, 2014
Dennis Drazin New Jersey sportsbetting

Dennis Drazin is confident about NJ sports betting

A federal judge intervened to temporarily block New Jersey’s plans to allow sports betting at the state’s racetrack and casinos.

State lawmakers have been trying to find ways to bring sports betting to New Jersey for years, but it looks like all attempts are destined to fail. A few weeks ago, officials passed a bill allowing licensed casinos and racetracks to accept wagers.

After Governor Chris Christie signed the document into law and Monmouth Park said it was ready to start taking bets last Sunday, professional sports leagues challenged the decision in court, asking the judge to issue a temporary restraining order to prevent this from happening.

U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp decided to grant the request made by the National Football League, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and other sports groups, but did not rule on the merits of the issue yet. A full hearing will be scheduled in the future.

A spokesman for Christie emphasized that the restraining order is temporary and added: “We continue to have full confidence in the strength and appropriateness of our position as we move forward in the litigation.”

USA Today: Judge: New Jersey can’t launch sports betting

Latest gambling news announce that a federal judge decided not to allow casinos and racetracks in New Jersey to start taking sports bets. In his ruling late Friday, US District Court Judge Michael Shipp put in place a temporary restraining order to prevent state operators from offering such services last week.

Monmouth Park was planning on giving its bookmaking operations a test run on Sunday, when it would have accepted bets on NFL games, but the court said Governor Chris Christie can’t launch sports betting in the state for now.

Monmouth Park officials were expecting about 10,000 people to rush to the track this Sunday to bet on Jets-Bills, Eagles-Cardinals, as well as on other NFL games. The track was going to open as early as 7 am, in order to allow visitors to place wagers on the Lions-Falcons game played in London at 9:30 am E.T.

But the NFL and other American sports leagues have filed a complaint asking the judge to stop state operators from taking bets immediately, invoking a 1992 federal law restricting sports betting to Nevada, Delaware, Oregon, and Montana.

A final decision will be made only after a full hearing, but for now the judge has issued a restraining order stopping Monmouth Park from going ahead with its plans. Attorneys representing the racetrack have argued that the business won’t survive without this new source of revenue.

NESN: Judge Grants Leagues’ Request, Stops N.J. Sports Betting Temporarily

Following a request from four major professional sports leagues and the NCAA, a federal judge issued a restraining order preventing New Jersey operators from taking sports bets for now. The request was made by the NFL, the NBA, the NHL, Major League Baseball and the NCAA, who went to court over a new bill signed by Governor Chris Christie, allowing casinos and racetracks in the state to offer betting services.

Under current gambling laws, Nevada is the only state allowed to offer betting on individual games at local bookmakers. Delaware also offers multi-game parlay pools, requiring players to pick several games correctly before winning any money.

“More legal gambling leads to more total gambling, which in turns leads to an increased incentive to fix plaintiffs’ matches,” Shipp said in court last Friday, adding that sports betting in New Jersey “would engender the same ills” that lawmakers sought to combat when they came up with the 1992 federal law.

Attorneys representing the sports organizations have argued that the leagues would suffer irreparable harm if such offers were available in the state. The lawsuit will proceed and the court will schedule a full hearing, but Shipp said a temporary restraining order was necessary to make sure that the matter is properly debated in court first.

Wall Street Journal: Judge Blocks Bid to Legalize Sports Betting in New Jersey

A previous attempt to overturn the sports betting ban and allow New Jersey players to bet on sports failed, and officials are not sure what will happen next. For now, Nevada continues to remain the only state where sports betting is fully legal. Delaware has a few similar operations, but the state only offers multi-game parlay pools.

While Atlantic City casinos said they would wait for the judge’s decision before starting any bookmaking operations, Monmouth Park Racetrack had originally planned to begin sports betting this weekend. The venue’s plans were put on hold by the restraining order.

Dennis Drazin, the operator of Monmouth Park, wrote in a recent statement: “While we are disappointed not to be able to start this Sunday, we are confident that sports betting will be coming to New Jersey in the very near future.”

While preventing the racetrack from starting its new operations, Judge Shipp also requested the five plaintiffs to put up a $1.7 million bond, to cover New Jersey’s potential revenue losses should the state eventually win the argument. The judge also said the temporary restraining order only applies to sports scores at events run by the four leagues and the NCAA.

Investor Plans Remake of Townsville Casino

Nov 12, 2014
Chris Morris will revive the Jupiters casino

Chris Morris will revive the Jupiters casino

Everyone was wondering why Chris Morris would buy a dying casino, but the businessman has big plans for the Jupiters in Townsville.

Founder of Computershare, Morris told reporters his dream was to create an exciting new package for all tourists to enjoy, and Jupiters will play an important role in his plan.

According to the latest gambling news
, he is looking to get more international tourists to come to the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree and the outback, by building a small resort complete with a gambling venue.

“Having the casino allows you the cash flow to do other things,” he explained.

Australian gambling companies have been targeting mostly Asian high-rollers and Echo Entertainment and Crown Resorts have even fought over a casino spot in Brisbane and a proposed $8 billion casino project in Cairns.

But Chris Morris is planning on focusing his attention and investing all his efforts in Townsville to draw more locals, not just foreign visitors. There are several direct flights to the regional centre and the businessman plans to take advantage of this.

Business Review Weekly: Why Rich Lister Chris Morris bought ‘worst-performing casino in Australia’

The Business Review Weekly has estimated Morris’ fortune at $700 million. The businessman built a reputation by working in the tech industry. He co-founded ASX-listed share registry business Computershare, but nowadays he’s focusing mostly on tourism.

His tourism and entertainment company, Colonial Leisure Group, owns 15 businesses, including a pubs, a brewery on Margaret River and the Daintree Eco Lodge located in north Queensland. With the Jupiters deal sealed, the total amount invested in Queensland over the past three years reaches $100 million.

In addition to these businesses and properties, Chris Morris recently bought an outback cattle station, Mount Mulligan, and owns Orpheus Island Resort plus a Queensland helicopter charter company.

While he opposes the idea of installing pokies in pubs, Morris says offering these gambling machines in casinos is okay, arguing that “people make a conscious decision to go to casinos.”

The Australian businessman doesn’t have much experience in the gambling industry, but he believes the Jupiters casino has “huge potential”, which is why he brought Brad Morgan on board, who recently ran SkyCity Entertainment’s Darwin casino.

The Australian: CLG pays $70m to snap up Jupiters

The private company owned by Chris Morris, the founder of Computershare, has offered $70 million to buy Echo Entertainment’s Jupiters Townsville casino. The deal was struck through ANZ Corporate Advisory.

The price of the casino equates to 10 times its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization for the previous financial year. The new buyer is looking to invest money in redeveloping the casino, to make it part of a large-scale integrated resort.

John Redmond, managing director at Echo, said: “Recent performance of Jupiters Townsville has been positive. However, given the scale of operations and the size of the local market, we saw more limited expansion opportunities, and therefore strategic fit, with the group’s other assets.”

The company would make an $8 million pre-tax profit on the $70 million sale.

A statement by Colonial Leisure Group added: “We are excited about the opportunities and synergies this acquisition represents. Combining our extensive expertise in hospitality management and ability to further invest, we will develop Jupiters Townsville Hotel and Casino into a leading regional resort, improving the operational and financial performance of the property.”

MyWealth News: International high rollers drive Echo’s earnings higher

According to a financial report released at the end of October, Echo Entertainment said it expects its normalized earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) to reach between $245 million and $260 million in the first half of the 2015 financial year. The figure reflects a 31% increase from the previous year.

The current financial year has already brought the company a revenue of $216 million, a 78% rise compared to the previous year within its international VIP rebate business, which was “breaking previous records” according to chief executive Matt Bekier. Between 2010 and 2013, Echo’s VIP business has expanded by 224%.

“The positive trading momentum generated in 2H FY14 continues to prevail. We are experiencing good demand in all properties, especially in domestic electronic gaming,” he said.

But Echo has bigger plans in Australia. Taking advantage of the country’s favorable gambling laws, the company recently submitted a proposal to develop a multi-billion dollar resort at Queen’s Wharf Brisbane. Echo was shortlisted for the location along with rival casino developer Crown Resorts.

“In terms of the Brisbane bid, we can’t yet disclose the details of what we are proposing to build, or the scale of the tourism, economic or job-creation benefits to Queensland,” Bekier said. “But let me assure you that we have put forward a responsible offer that delivers a truly iconic precinct.”

Illegal Betting Ring Case Could Fail Due to Procedural Errors by the FBI

Nov 03, 2014
Using tricks to take down an illegal betting ring didn’t work for the FBI

Using tricks to take down an illegal betting ring didn’t work for the FBI

Using tricks to take down an illegal betting ring didn’t work for the FBI. Now a high-ranking member of the 14K triad society could slip through its fingers due to “procedural errors.”

Last week, the word got out that FBI agents went into Paul Phua’s apartment at Caesars Palace disguised as cable guys, to gather evidence without a warrant. As more “procedural errors” come to light, the alleged gambling kingpin could get away with his illegal betting operation because the bureau itself broke a few rules while trying to get the bad guy.

US federal agents say Paul Phua Wei-seng is a high-ranking member of Hong Kong’s 14K triad society. Phua and his son Darren Phua Wai-kit have been charged with operating an illegal betting ring from a hotel in Las Vegas, during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. But they could both get away with it because of alleged breach of procedure by the FBI.

According to the latest gambling news, Phua’s lawyers filed a motion to suppress testimony he provided during a police raid, because agents didn’t follow the rules.

South China Morning Post: Procedural errors may kill FBI gambling case involving Asian kingpin Paul Phua

Phua and his son were arrested and charged with operating an illegal gambling ring in Las Vegas, during the World Cup. Now prosecutors have to prove that the two Malaysians used and operated these betting platforms from the luxury suites they rented at Caesars Palace.

Lawyers called the triad allegations unfounded and said the 50 year-old man “absolutely maintains he is innocent of the gambling charges in the United States”. Now they’re also trying to suppress statements where the defendants said Phua held a stake in IBC Bet, one of the largest betting operations in the Philippines.

Before obtaining these statements, police allegedly violated the defendants’ constitutional rights by failing to give a so-called Miranda warning, which informs suspects that they have the right to remain silent during an interrogation, until they get legal advice.

The two Malaysian men said they were staying at a villa which was offered to them free of charge by Caesars Palace. The motion says their defense lawyer was not allowed to meet them while they were being questioned.
In his affidavit, Phua wrote: “The first agent I saw pointed a machine gun at me and shouted, ‘Put your f*ing hands up’. Everyone in the villa was handcuffed, herded into the dining room, and told to get on our knees and face the wall.”

Before the World Cup, several illegal bookmakers have been arrested in Southeast Asia. Dozens of people were charged with breaking gambling laws by running unlicensed sports wagering services. Some of them pointed to IBC.

PokerNews: Did Caesars Palace and the FBI Collude in the Arrests of Paul Phua?

This July, eight people were arrested at Caesars Palace Las Vegas for being involved in an illegal betting ring. Among those arrested was 50-year-old Malaysian high-stakes poker player and alleged high-ranking member of the 14K Triad Paul Phua.

The arrests were part of an FBI sting and Phua’s lawyers claim the defendants’ Fourth Amendment rights were violated because the raid was conducted under an unlawful search warrant.

Investigations began this summer, when the defendants rented the villas and asked the casino staff for an “unusual amount of electronic equipment”. According to newspaper reports, the venue’s security personnel became suspicious and called the FBI, then worked together with agents to cut off Internet access to have an excuse to send undercover agents inside.

Posing as service technicians, FBI agents gained access to the villas and collected evidence to obtain a warrant in court. The defense argued that the warrant was obtained through an unlawful scheme.

“A ruling upholding these intrusions would cause innocent Americans to live their daily lives burdened with the palpable sense that their government is regularly scheming to spy on them in their homes,” lawyers said.

The federal government is expected to respond soon.

GamingZion: Gambler, Bookie, Diplomat, Gangster: the Fantastic Story of Paul Phua Wei-seng

Each year, illegal betting generates billions of dollars for criminal syndicates around the world. The largest scandal this year was when the FBI busted an operation run from two villas at the Caesars Hotel in Las Vegas. The head of the operation, reports said, was Paul Phua, a high-stakes poker player, former diplomat and alleged gangster.

Less than one month before being caught in Vegas, he had faced the same charges in Macau but posted bail and fled from the city. Newspapers said he flew straight to Sin City and continues his illegal business from here.

In addition to being a suspected black market bookmaker, Phua is also a legitimate businessman, owner of Sat Ieng Sociedade Unipessoal junket in Macau, where he likes to take a personal interest in entertaining his customers. He also holds a majority stake in IBC Bet, a company based in the Philippines which has grown to become one of the world’s most profitable sportsbooks.

From 2011 until his arrest in Las Vegas, Phua also held the title of San Marinese ambassador to Montenegro, although reports say he never properly checked in with the authorities in Podgorica, but did gain the advantage of traveling freely almost anywhere.

Phua is known in the world of high-stakes poker too. He makes regular appearances at the Poker King Club in Macau, and in 2012 he played in the $1 million buy-in tournament at the World Series of Poker.

Federal investigators say he is also a high-ranking member of the 14K triad, thought to be one of Hong Kong’s oldest and most powerful criminal organizations. It remains to be seen if the case against him stands or not, given the procedural errors committed by the FBI.

Court Puts New Jersey Sports Betting on Hold

Oct 28, 2014
Judge Shipp issues a temporary restraining order on sports betting operations in New Jersey

Judge Shipp issues a temporary restraining order on sports betting operations in New Jersey

The judge also said the temporary restraining order only applies to sports scores at events run by the four leagues and the NCAA.

Details of the Indian Betting Scandal to Be Revealed

Oct 27, 2014
2013 Indian Premier League betting-fixing scandal is being investigated

2013 Indian Premier League betting-fixing scandal is being investigated

The team investigating the 2013 Indian Premier League betting-fixing scandal is expected to submit its report soon.

All eyes are on the cricket industry this week, as latest gambling news reveal more information on the betting-fixing scandal involving the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the next four days, the police team that investigated the case will present its final report to the Supreme Court. The next hearing is scheduled for November 10.

The police submitted its first report earlier in February, along with a sealed envelope containing the names of 13 people thought to be involved in the scandal. Only one of those names was disclosed – that of Narayanaswami Srinivasan, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) – but it was more than enough to show how deep the corruption scandal runs.

Six international cricketers are said to be among the 13 accused. Rumor has it the list includes India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina, as well as three first-class players. Dhoni and Raina were recently questioned in Delhi. Gurunath Meiyappan, the BCCI presiden’t son-in-law, is also said to be involved, along with Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh and Raj Kundra, coowner of Rajasthan Royals.

India Today: 2013 IPL betting-fixing scandal: Cops to submit report today

A team of four policemen is currently running all investigations, and the Mugdal committee will most likely base its report on their findings. The group is led by 1983 batch IPS officer Bibhuti Bhusana Mishra, who is also the Deputy Director General (Operations) of the Narcotics Control Bureau.

“The panel will submit the report based on whatever they [the police investigators] have found. It will discuss the evidence and their report, and will then come to a conclusion,” a source said on Sunday. “The final discussions will start tomorrow and will go on for the next three days consecutively after that – from October 27 to 30. And the report will be submitted to the Supreme Court on November 3.”

Regarding the identity of the 13 persons currently under investigation, the source said: “There are six international players and three non-internationals. We cannot name them because if their names don’t come out [as guilty]… we cannot spoil their careers.”

Srinivasan’s name was officially disclosed by the Supreme Court itself. The source added that, in addition to Vindoo and Kundra, another person would “obviously be Meiyappan”.

DNA India: Gurunath Meiyappan, Vindoo Dara Singh’s voice sample confirmed in IPL spot-fixing case?

English newspapers have revealed that Chennai Super Kings team principal Gurunath Meiyappan’s voice was heard in a tapped phone conversation. The information was confirmed by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory. Experts also heard the voice of Vindoo Dara Singh and other people who were arrested under the accusation of spot-fixing.

An internal investigation ordered by the BCCI cleared Meiyappan and Raj Kundra of corruption. Soon after, Justice Mudgal was appointed to investigate the IPL scandal. He said allegations of illegal betting against Meiyappan stand proven.

Meiyappan, who is son-in-law of BBCI president and Chennai Super Kings owner Narayanaswami Srinivasan, was accused of providing inside information to bookmakers, as well as of placing wagers on IPL matches.

Srinivasan is also said to be involved. The Supreme Court has suspended him from his position as head of the BCCI until investigations are over. Now he is President of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Wall Street Journal: Police: Indian Cricket Team Owner Admits to Betting

The police in Delhi confirmed that Raj Kundra, co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals cricket franchise, has admitted to placing illegal bets on IPL matches, through a business associate who runs a bookmaking operation. Kundra was questioned as part of a broader investigation into illegal sports wagering in the country. Although Indian gambling laws forbid betting on cricket, the businessman was not arrested.

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar told reporters: “He has admitted to betting. We have also come to know that he has lost a lot of money in betting.”

Three players were arrested in May last year for allegedly colluding with bookmakers to fix certain moments in cricket matches.

In a statement released after the accusations were made public, the Rajasthan Royals said: “We are completely taken by surprise…We will fully cooperate with the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation. The management at Rajasthan Royals has a zero-tolerance approach to anything that is against the spirit of the game.”

Kundra owns a nearly 12% stake in the franchise, through Jaipur IPL Pvt. Ltd. Although he admitted to placing wagers on matches, there was no evidence that he was involved in spot-fixing.

GamingZion: Just How Deep Does the Indian Cricket Betting Scandal Run?

The scandal broke out in May 2013, when cricket players Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested by the Delhi police. More arrests followed, as the police suspected 11 other people of being involved in the scandal. The BCCI said it had very strict policies against betting corruption and decided to suspend the three players just a few hours after they were arrested.

A few days after the arrest, actor Vindu Dara Singh and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) former team principal Gurunath Meiyappan were also taken in. Meiyappan was initially released on bail, but then he was caught asking team members for information on matches and passing it on to bookmakers.

A report by Justice Mukul Mudgal’s committee said: “The role of Gurunath Meiyappan in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as the team official stands proved and the allegations of betting and passing of information against Meiyappan stand proved.”

At the end of May, BBCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke resigned after criticizing the way the board handled the matter and conducted its investigation. Rajeev Shukla, chairman of the IPL, followed their example.

While being headed by Meiyappan’s father-in-law, the BCCI cleared the owners of Rajasthan Royals and CSK, but the Bombay High Court established that the committee appointed by the board was constituted illegally. Srinivasan eventually stepped aside, forced by public pressure, but the measure is only temporarily.

Poker Champion Accused of Faking Online Poker Accounts

Oct 19, 2014
Darren Woods accused of opening fake accounts on poker sites

Darren Woods accused of opening fake accounts on poker sites

Darren Woods became a star in the poker industry after winning a world championship. Now he is accused of opening fake accounts on poker sites.

The 29-year-old from Healing allegedly used other people’s personal details to open fake accounts on virtual poker rooms. According to the latest gambling news, 13 fraud charges were brought against him between January 2007 and January 2012. Woods, of course, denied them all.

The court heard he not only used a false name when he signed an e-mail asking for proof of his supposed identity, but also submitted a copy of someone else’s passport as part of an alleged con. In other words, he tried to fool gambling operators running the poker sites, by pretending to be someone else.

His father, 56-year-old Morteza Gharoon, is said to be involved in four of these cases. He is now facing fraud offences, in addition to being charged with money laundering through credit billings, on behalf of his son.

Grimsby Telegraph: Claims poker star from Healing used other people’s identities to open fake accounts

Using 13 fake accounts gave Darren Woods an advantage, allowing him to gain benefits and commissions he wouldn’t have had access to by using just his own account.

He was made bankrupt in 2006 but made a fantastic financial recovery in July 2011, when he became a poker champion after winning a world series of poker game in Las Vegas. He took home $213,000 in cash for his efforts.

Woods’ father Morteza Gharoon, an Iranian national, was once a successful property investor. His impressive portfolio included several properties in the Grimsby area. The pair allegedly used the names and personal information of real people, in order to open fake accounts on internet gambling sites and virtual wallets.

The prosecution said Woods tried to open an internet poker account in 2010, using the name of Lloyd Stockley-Bond. But gambling laws require online operators to take measures to verify the identity of their users, so a Blue Square manager sent him an e-mail asking him to provide a copy of his identification, as well as proof of his address.

In order to “fool the systems”, the poker player allegedly bought private networks, as well as several computer, using them to disguise his online identity. The poker player is accused of fraud by false representation and the trial continues.

OnlinePoker: WSOP Winner Darren Woods Charged With Online Poker Fraud

UK WSOP winner Darren Woods appeared in Sheffield Crown Court after being accused of committing online poker fraud between January 2007 and January 2012. With a total of 12 charges brought against him, Woods went from a respected limit hold’em coach to an alleged fraudster.

In 2011, he was a coach at pokerstrategy.com, after having won $213,431 at the WSOP $2,500 Limit Hold’em Six Handed Event. His success also brought him a very lucrative affiliate sponsorship deal with online poker operator 888.

But the fame didn’t last long, because Darren ‘Dooshcom’ Woods was accused of colluding with another player who went under the username ‘Benkaremail’, to win hundreds of thousands of dollars against several high stakes online players.

His father, Morteza Gharoon is also accused of helping him on four occasions. Charges include money laundering, but the dad said his son has reassured him that his actions were perfectly legitimate.

An article published by the Telegraph explains: “Woods allegedly made money from the fraudulently opened accounts by playing at the same online poker table at the same time using different identities, giving him an advantage because he would unfairly know the hands of some of the other players.”

It’s unclear whether the alleged cheating formed the basis of the prosecution or whether the trial focuses solely on the accusations of Woods scamming 888 to gain $236,994 in affiliate commission.

PokerStrategy: Coach Darren Woods Accused of Collusion

In September 2011, PokerStrategy published statement on the allegations of collusion – at the Push-or-Fold tables at 888poker – brought against Darren ‘DooshCom’ Woods, who was a coach at the website. The company announced it was suspending him from his position.

A group of high stakes players had accused DooshCom and another player of sharing hole cards in 3 and 4-handed games to gain an unfair advantage. The pair was playing high stakes, at blinds of $500 or $1000.

Players became increasingly suspicious of Dooshcom and his “unknown” partner, which is why they started gathering information, compared histories and unanimously concluded that they were being cheated. Eventually, they wrote about it on forums, in an attempt to warn other players.

PokerStrategy decided to investigate the matter alongside 888poker, and after making it clear that it does not tolerate unfair play, decided to suspend Woods from his position as coach.

Sweden Taken to European Court Over Monopolistic Gambling Laws

Oct 18, 2014
The European Commission started legal action against Sweden

The European Commission started legal action against Sweden

The European Commission started legal action against Sweden, for failing to comply with European gambling laws.

Sweden is in trouble. After issuing a number of warnings, the European Commission (EC) is finally fed up and is dragging Swedish legislators to court over the country’s conservative and monopolistic gambling laws, which fail to comply with the European requirement of free movement of services.

The EC has referred the Nordic member state to the highest European court in two separate cases related to the restrictions imposed on the licensing process. Under the current legislation, Swedish authorities only welcome domestic and state-owned operators.

The Commission released a statement explaining its decision: “Sweden is referred to the Court of Justice for imposing restrictions on the organization and promotion of online betting services in a way which is inconsistent with EU law. Changes to the Swedish gambling law in order to make it compliant with EU law have long been envisaged but never implemented.”

Daily Mail: EU Commission sues Sweden over online betting, poker laws

According to the latest gambling news, the two cases concern licensing for online betting and poker sites. European laws require all 28 member states to allow cross-border supply of such services. They may however impose restrictions to protect local players from the harmful effects of online gambling, but only if they prove that these measures are necessary and applied in a suitable and consistent manner.

In its first case against Sweden, the EC has criticized the country’s licensing system for online betting, claiming that it was not applied in a systematic way. Upon analyzing the current legislation, as well as reports and other documents, the Commission found that Swedish authorities don’t supervise the exclusive betting provider adequately.

Sweden’s government has responded to these accusations on Thursday, saying that its intentions were “to speed up the work that has been carried out for a long time in order to find a licensing system that could be introduced in Sweden”.

The second case is about the Nordic country’s regulation of online poker sites. To be more precise, the EC has suggested that Swedish authorities had turned a blind eye to the unauthorized offer and promotion of poker games on the local market.

The European Gaming and Betting Association is happy with the Commission’s move and has calling it “a breakthrough decision”. The two cases marked the first time when Brussels took a member state to court over gambling laws. The EC had previously asked Sweden to change its laws in 2007, giving it a final warning in November last year.

Europa.eu: Commission requests Member States to comply with EU law when regulating gambling services

In a press release issued on November 20, 2013, the European Commission has called on a number of Member States to adapt their national laws on gambling to ensure compliance with the fundamental freedoms granted by the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU.

While Member States are free to set certain restrictions and limitations on cross-border supply of gambling services to protect the public and prevent fraud, these measures need to be objective and sustained with arguments. The necessity and suitability of these restrictions has to be demonstrated, and all laws have to be consistent with this mission.

In a Communication dating from October 2012, the EC announced that it would complete an assessment of national provisions in the pending infringements cases. As a consequence of the assessment, the Commission has requested Sweden to comply with European rules on the free movement of services and get rid of the state monopoly on gambling services.

Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland and Romania have also been asked to provide further information on national legislation restricting the supply of gambling services.

GamingZion: EGBA Says Swedish Gambling Laws are not in Compliance with European Regulations

A report issued by the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) shows that Sweden needs to change its current monopolistic gambling laws. Over the past few years, European officials have sent out several written warnings to authorities in Sweden, asking them to ensure compliance with Europe’s rules on free movement of services.

If the country fails to comply with these requests, it will be referred to the European Court of Justice.

“Evidently the best option for all concerned, and especially for Swedish consumers is that Sweden will commit to re-regulate its market and allow online operators to apply for online licenses,” EGBA secretary general Maarten Haijer told reporters.

The EGBA officials added that a change in legislation is “inevitably the future”, as there is a rising demand for online and land-based gambling services in Sweden.

“If the status quo remains, it is clear that the European Commission (EC) will have no other option than to refer Sweden to the European Court… The commission is clearly convinced that Sweden’s gambling monopoly is not in conformity with EU law,” Haijer said.

Poker News: Sweden’s Gambling Law to Change in 2014: “We Hope the Commission Will Not Sue Us”

Even though the European Commission has warned Sweden about its monopolistic gambling laws a long time ago, authorities are asking for more time and said that “changes are imminent”. Decision-makers promised to draw up a new set of norms, adding that they could be ready as early as next November.

EGBA secretary general Maarten Haijer rejected the proposal and said “immediate sanctions” would be imposed. Erik Thedéen, Sweden’s Treasury Undersecretary admitted in an interview that the government is trying to buy some time, hoping to avoid being sanctioned.

Olivier Guersent, Head of Cabinet for Commissioner Michel Barnier, met with Thedéen to talk about the issue. Officials said new regulations could be drawn up by the end of 2014, provided there are no unnecessary delays caused by the EC.

Thedéen added that he “explained Mr. Guersent that with the current schedule Sweden aims to be ready by November or December” and added: “The European Commission gave no indication about their future behavior. Parties agreed to hold a dialogue at the official level. We hope they will not sue us.”

Lottery Winner Dresses Up as Bear to Redeem Prize

Oct 16, 2014
Chinese lottery latest prize is worth $84.8 million

Chinese lottery latest prize is worth $84.8 million

Wearing a costume when picking up lottery jackpot seems to have become a weird tradition in China.

The latest gambling news reported that a Chinese lottery winner decided to celebrate his lucky win in style. Well… we wouldn’t quite call it “style”, but it was certainly special. The man put on a bear costume for the ceremony where he was handed the lottery cheque.

He wasn’t the only one to wear a special outfit when appearing in front of the cameras. A few months ago, a person dressed up as Mickey Mouse took home 398 million yuan, and in 2011 another lucky winner took the big 565 million yuan jackpot disguised as a panda. Others wore superhero masks to look like Power Rangers, Batman or Spiderman.

Apart from the lottery, China doesn’t allow gambling. But the prizes people win with lottery tickets would stir the envy of any casino winner. The latest prize is worth $84.8 million.

Lottery Post: Chinese lottery winner claims jackpot in bear costume

After winning the lottery in China, a man from Shanxi disguised himself as a silly cartoon bear to pick up his giant check worth 520 million yuan ($84.8 million). The man provided one of the most exciting press conferences this year and consequently appeared on several online news pages.

The RMB 520 million-cheque was issued by the welfare lottery of the Shanxi province and is the third largest jackpot handed out in the country’s history. The winner told reporters that he spent between 20,000 and 30,000 RMB ($3,250 – $4,900) on lottery tickets every year.

The odd tradition of wearing ridiculous costumes when picking up over-sized checks dates back 25 or so years. In August, Mickey Mouse won 398 million yuan, and in 2011 a panda took home a 565 million yuan jackpot.

It is believed that lottery winners disguise themselves in order to avoid being recognized by family, friends, enemies or the government, when their image is broadcasted on local television.

People Daily: ‘Mickey Mouse’ in Shandong wins a 400 million lottery

On August 11, 2014, the Sports Lottery Center in Shandong handed out a 397.6 million-yuan cheque to another big winner. At the interview, the man showed up dressed in a Mickey Mouse costume. He also used a device to change his voice.

The man has been buying sports lottery tickets for years, and told reporters that participating in the draw is the first step to winning. Despite being rich now, the man said he is planning to lead a normal life. He added that he would become more involved in charitable causes and try to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Zhang Yunhai, a manger in Sports Lottery Center of Shandong told reporters: “With a good heart, the winner voluntarily donated 20 million RMB to found a Sports Lottery Fund to help people in need in the society.”

This was the biggest lottery prize won in Shandong Province so far, and among the highest awarded in all of China.

What’s On Tianjin: China’s largest lottery winner claims US$88.5m prize in panda costume

34 days after hitting an amazing jackpot, a lottery winner showed up to claim his prize wearing a huge panda helmet. The winner is a 40-year-old self-employed businessman who lives in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province and has broken several lottery records.

The panda scored the biggest lottery prize awarded in China so far, worth a total 565 million yuan ($88.5 million). After paying 109 million yuan ($17.08 million) in taxes, he was left with a prize of 436 million yuan ($68.34 million). Out of that amount, 20 million yuan ($3.13 million) were donated to local charities helping the poor children and the elderly. The man then promised to continue giving money every year.

He seemed to have a very relaxed attitude towards his huge lottery win, as he waited over a month before actually claiming the money. In an interview with the local newspaper, he added that he’d been playing the lottery for 11 years and he often forgets to check the winning numbers. For a long time, he wasn’t even aware what huge prize awaited him.

The numbers on his winning ticket were chosen according to his schedule that day: he got up at 6, had breakfast at 7 and spent 9 yuan on breakfast.

Wall Street Journal: Batman Wins Chinese Lottery

Every week, Chinese newspapers have a story on a lottery winner who showed up to claim his prize in a costume. While some of them wear simple sunglasses or face masks, or just pull their hoods over their heads to avoid being recognized, others mix things up by dressing up as Batman or a medieval knight.

This isn’t at all a practical joke, but rather a “street-smart” etiquette in China. As people can take up to tens of millions of dollars in winnings, having that much money can also attract trouble. Whether it’s because they want to avoid getting threatening phone calls, or simply don’t want to be in the public’s attention, wearing disguises is the solution lottery winners have come up with.

Ironically, wearing such ridiculous costumes has brought these people in the center of attention, as bloggers and online news sites are now talking about their costumes, posting photos and choosing their favorite ones.

Chukchansi Casino Faces Uncertain Times after Armed Standoff

Chukchansi Casino faces uncertain times after armed standoff

A Federal Judge decided to order down the closure of Chukchansi casino in California after different groups of Indian tribes got involved in an armed altercation at the gaming center. The Judge ruled that they may have endangered lives and posed considerable healthy risks to both employees and players that were present in the casino at the time of the event.

abc30.com: 1,300 employees out of work during Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino shutdown

Gambling news reports that the popular Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino has been closed under federal orders issued by an esteemed judge. Different Indian factions came to an armed standoff as part of efforts to take control of the gaming establishment which later lead to a lockdown of the casino.

Now the owners are pushing hard to have the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino reopened as soon as possible. Every single day that is remains closed serves a blow to their finances, as massive revenue is lost. Chukchansi Indian Co-Chairman Reggie Lewis stressed that the local community and employees depend on revenues generated by the casino operations.

“A lot of people depend on the casino. And since it has been opened, that’s the way everybody looks at it; it’s an asset, and we want to keep our asset functional,” stated Lewis. The casino was closed following an event that involved 20 gunmen storming into the building in an attempt to seize control of the entire establishment.

Reports indicate that the gunmen are part of a tribal faction led by Tex McDonald who stresses the casino is in fact theirs and all of the proceeds generated by Chukchansi belong to their tribe. “They came in here about a month ago and took our casino over, and they’re illegally here. So we came in and we claimed our casino.”

The Fresno Bee: Chukchansi casino closure puts planned events, interrupted gamblers in limbo

The Chukchansi is set to miss out on a great of events due to its closure. The alumni of Hoover High School were planning on staging a reunion event this upcoming Saturday, however now they won’t be able to do so considering the recent circumstances that led to current predicament that casino is in.

Stacey Olmos is one of the members of the reunion committee and she stated that the group gathered $7,500 from 167 Hoover graduates and paid the money to host the event at the prominent casino. With the Chukchansi now closed until further notice, they don’t seem to have any viable options to get the money back.

The altercations involved two Indian factions which led to some casino personnel in receiving injures as a result of the armed struggle. Separate groups of the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians have been at it for a number of years. Now the casino has taken center stage as each faction is claiming that the popular gaming establishment belongs to them.

As a direct result of the attempted takeover that involved a hostile battle, the National Indian Gaming Commission and the state attorney general gave orders for the casino to be shut down. It has been reported that the faction that tried to take the casino is led by Tex McDonald, and that in fact the business initially belonged to them and not the current holders.

Yahoo! Finance: California casino is closed after armed standoff

Following the events that occurred last week at the Chukchansi casino, there seems to be no imminent reopening date set on the agenda for the popular establishment. Tribal factions were involved in an armed standoff involving the takeover, however officials have expressed that the casino may be closed for some time as they continue to investigate the circumstances.

Over a decade ago a similar event unfolded in Iowa that also involved two Indian factions. Two leadership factions were sanctioned by the National Indian Gaming Commission which marked the last casino closure that involved a politically motivated background in the US.

A tribal faction took control of the Meskwaki Casino & Hotel, however the action was not authorized by the federal government. Once the deadline for the rogue group to leave passed, the commission chairman released an order to temporarily close the business. Later the closure turned permanent and the owners had to wait a full 7 points until it could reopen.

Phil Hogen, a former NIGC chairman, highlighted, “The ones physically running the place were not recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and could not come to an agreement to put the recognized folks in place. From what I’ve heard about (Chukchansi), it’s much more explosive than Meskwaki.”

PoliticsHome: Four bookmakers set up watchdog to keep themselves in check

Latest gambling news reports that a federal judge by the name of Lawrence O’Neill ordered the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino to shut down after tribal factions tried to take control of the business. The judge was acting on emergency request from the state attorney general and has expressed that there is no immediate date set for the casino to reopen for the public.

After deciding that the casino posed a threat to the public, the National Indian Gaming Commission issued an express order for the establishment to be closed. Reports suggest that each faction controlled a different part of the casino, and neither wanted to stand down as they each believed they had the right to seize control of what is theirs.

Madera County Sheriff John Anderson stated that around 500 people quickly rushed out of the casino once they figured what was happening. He stressed that tension were high for weeks before leading up to the event that occurred on Thursday and has sought assistance on the matter from the state and federal officials.

Despite making no arrests in the lengthy process, the Sheriff’s department was able to cool down the tensions. Anderson said, “When they move the war into the casino, it meant we had to stop this. We have not been getting closer to a solution. If anything, we have gotten farther away.”

Ivey Not Entitled to His GBP7.7 Million in Winnings, Judge Rules

Oct 09, 2014
Phil Ivey Edge sorting

Edge-sorting didn’t pay off for Phil Ivey

Ivey’s lawyers weren’t convincing enough when they argued that losing GBP7.7 million in just a few days was the casino’s “mistake”.

The court denied Phil Ivey his GBP7.7 million winnings, remained unpaid after a casino accused him of cheating to get the money. The professional poker player admitted he used a technique called “edge sorting” to win at the baccarat table, but claimed casino employees were negligent which means losing all that money was the company’s “mistake”.

After London’s Crockfords Club realized that Ivey had taken advantage of a flaw in the playing cards, the casino refused to pay out. Ivey sued the company to get his prize, but the latest gambling news announced he lost the case.

Irish Examiner: Poker player loses €9.7m casino challenge

The 38-year-old American poker pro won the money in august 2012, by playing Punto Banco, a version of baccarat. After four sessions where he won GBP7.7 million, the Mayfair casino returned his GBP1 million stake and said it would wire him the rest of the money. Phil Ivey returned to the US only to find that his money never arrived.

The Crockfords Club is owned by Genting Casinos UK, a gambling operator which has more than 40 casinos across the country. Company representatives said the technique used by Ivey was not a legitimate strategy, which is why they had no liability to him. Edge-sorting is used to give the player a “first card advantage”.

The lawyers who defended the casino said Ivey’s conduct defeated the essential premise of baccarat. Therefore, they argued, there was no gaming contract or cheating.

“Crockfords is pleased with the judgement of the High Court today supporting its defense of a claim by Mr Ivey,” a spokesman for the casino told reporters. “It is our policy not to discuss our clients’ affairs in public and we very much regret that proceedings were brought against us.”

Ivey said through a spokesman: “I am obviously disappointed with this judge’s decision. As I said in court, it is not my nature to cheat and I would never do anything to risk my reputation. I am pleased that the judge acknowledged in court that I was a truthful witness.”

The poker player’s lawyers were refused permission to appeal the decision. However, they can renew their application to the Court of Appeal directly.

London Evening Standard: Poker champion loses case against London casino over £7.7m winnings

Phil Ivey, who is known for his excellent poker results, said he would never jeopardize his reputation by cheating at a casino.

“We observe the unwritten doctrine: how do I find a legal way to beat the house? Any method that could amount to cheating would breach the doctrine and cause you to be ostracized by your fellow players – we are all very careful to stay the right side of the line and we discuss advantage play strategies at length,” he said.

“I believe that what we did was a legitimate strategy and we did nothing more than exploit Crockfords’ failures to take proper steps to protect themselves against a player of my ability. Clearly today the judge did not agree,” Ivey added.

His counsel Richard Spearman explained to the court that edge-sorting meant using information found on the backs of the cards and making certain requests during the game, in order to gain an advantage. Besides, the cards were chosen by the casino and staff could have refused Ivey’s requests at any time. The poker pro said his integrity was “infinitely more important than a big win”, and added that he sued the casino to prove that he was “unjustly treated”.

On the other hand, Christopher Pymont, who represented the casino, argued that the casino did not regard Ivey as an advantage player at that time. Instead, they thought of him as an old VIP customer who they could trust.

The Guardian: Top poker player Phil Ivey loses court battle over £7.7m winnings

The judge mentioned in his ruling that the case turned on whether Ivey cheated or not, adding that the poker player was not entitled to his winnings if the obtained them in an unfair manner.

“What Mr Ivey and Ms Sun did was to persuade the croupier to turn some of the cards in the dealing shoe to permit them to know that they were or were very likely to be sevens, eights or nines, and in circumstances where she did not realize she had done so – and, if she had, would have immediately stopped play,” the court ruling said.

The judge said Ivey did not just take advantage of a simple error, but did it by using the dealer “as his innocent agent or tool”. Furthermore, the judge added, the poker player was aware that neither the croupier, not her superiors knew what the consequences of her actions would be when she turned the cards around, as per his request.

“This is, in my view, cheating for the purpose of civil law,” the judge concluded before dismissing the case.

Trump Saves His Reputation, Gets to Remove Name from Atlantic City Casinos

Donald Trump saves his reputation

Donald Trump got what he wanted: his name is being taken off the now-bankrupt Trump Plaza casino in Atlantic City.

This week began with good news for Donald Trump. The business magnate won his case against Trump Entertainment Resorts, where he asked to have his name taken off the Atlantic City casinos. In fact, Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka asked that the name be stripped from the company altogether.

Workers started taking down the letters spelling out Trump’s name on Monday morning. They also removed slot machines from the old Trump Plaza, after the casino shut down on September 16. Meanwhile, the Taj Mahal is also struggling and could close in November.

Trump’s lawyers argued in front of the court that the businessman doesn’t want to have his name associated with a company that left two casinos fall into such disrepair. Trump Entertainment violated quality standards that both sides had agreed upon, they said.

While Trump Entertainment is trying to figure out a way to save what’s left of its business, the latest gambling news
is talking about Trump’s victory in court.

“This is a very important step for us,” Ivanka Trump told reporters at The Associated Press. “It was pretty cut and dry: when we gave them a license to use our name, it was contingent on quality control and performance. They did not meet the high standards of luxury in every other asset in the Trump brand.”

The company declined to comment on the case.

Trump Plaza closed at the middle of September, but the businessman’s name was still up there. The mogul is simultaneously seeking to have his name removed from the Taj Mahal, and from Trump Entertainment Resorts. At the same time, his daughter said he is considering buying the casino, to save it from bankruptcy.

The investor sent out a statement emphasizing that he has had nothing to do with the company – other than associating his name with it – since 2009.

“I am saddened to see that the current managers and owners of the Trump Plaza and Trump Taj Mahal were unable to operate these properties to the highest standards of luxury and success as required under the license agreement and consistent with my name and reputation.”

“Because of constant defaults of the standards stipulated in the license agreement, I had no choice but to terminate the license agreement and require TER to remove the Trump name from both buildings,” he explained.

Donald Trump got his way and his name will be peeled off the façade of the Trump Plaza Casino. A spokesperson for the company said removing the letters from the building will take a few weeks. The magnate sued Trump Entertainment Resorts, the company that runs the venue, asking that his name be removed from both the Plaza and the Taj Mahal.

“We have a very high standard and they didn’t meet it,” the businessman explained in an interview with CNN Money. “We essentially won the suit.”

The Taj Mahal is expected to shut down on November 13, after several attempts of saving it from bankruptcy have failed. Trump Plaza closed in September, becoming the fourth Atlantic City casino to go out of business this year and causing 8,000 people to lose their jobs. At this point, it seems like not even gambling laws or tax exemptions can save these businesses from bankruptcy.

“Atlantic City needs a total remake,” Trump said.

Trump built and owned both casinos in the beginning, but he decided to sell them seven years ago. Since then, he has been licensing his name and image to the new owners. The lawsuit was filed in August, when the investor accused Trump Entertainment Resorts of neglecting the venues and letting them “fall into an utter state of disrepair”.

The license agreement stipulated the brand’s “superior reputation” should be used in a “dignified manner”, offering the “highest quality”. But the business magnate said these standards weren’t met.

Trump Entertainment has gone out of business and is in bankruptcy court in Delaware, where it is trying to get permission to terminate pension plans for the Taj Mahal’s 2,800 employees. Last week, the judge refused to allow it for now, but scheduled more hearings on the casino’s proposal to cut costs.

The company’s plans for financial recovery include the elimination of employee pensions and healthcare benefits, supported by a $100 million investment from billionaire Carl Icahn. Trump Entertainment said that it would not be able to survive without these two vital measures, and added that it would have to close either on or before November 13.

While holding most of the company’s debt, Icahn said he would be willing to consider buying the Taj Mahal by converting the debt into ownership rights. But the offer doesn’t stand if the local government doesn’t make a few serious concessions. The investor has requested that Atlantic City drastically reduce property taxes on the casino.

Donald Trump still owns a 9% stake in Trump Entertainment, but the company is virtually worthless now. He and his daughter believe having their names associated with the two bankrupt casinos bring harm to their personal and professional reputation.
